Not enough resources when installing 2nd PVR-150 card

I am trying to install a second Hauppauge PVR-150 card in my Sage server. Upon installation the card shows the yellow ! in Device Manager and says "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use"

I am wondering if this is because it is trying to use the same resources as the first PVR-150 that is installed in my system?

I don't know that I should have run out of resources as, compared to some, I don't have all that much.

I am running Sage for WHS with 2GB of memory on a E8400 C2D CPU.

Devices:
2x HD-PVRs
2x Firewire drivers for channel changing on SA3250HD cable boxes
1x Kworld ATSC 110 OTA tuner PCI card
1x Hauppauge PVR-150
USB-UIRT

The problem occurred when adding the second PVR-150. It wouldn't install automatically - I selected to choose the device and chose the exact same name as the first installed PVR-150 which is Win TV PVR PCI II(26xx).

I have tried disabling my COM ports to free up resources. Anyone have any other ideas?

You probably also have a motherboard LPT device taking up an IRQ. Unless you actually have an old-fashioned non-USB printer attached, that should be safe to disable. If you have all SATA hard drives, and only one optical drive, you might be able to disable a secondary IDE channel as well.

That said, these cards should be capable of IRQ sharing, but you may have to try juggling them around to different PCI slots to find a combination that works with your motherboard. (This is one reason I like to stick with name-brand motherboards with decent chipsets that aren't so finicky about IRQ sharing.)

I will try that but this is a name brand mobo - it is an Asus P5Q. And I had all of the same cards plugged in a few months ago before I had to do a reinstall. Would I just have to reboot or should I uninstall and reinstall the card?

My mobo doesn't list an LPT1 port in Dev Mgr but I did disable the floppy drive controller. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, with a couple of different PVR-150 drivers, but I still get the same error.

I am loathe to screw something up with the existing system so I am somewhat hesitant about moving slots. I only have 3 PCI slots in my mobo - my ATSC tuner (Kworld), plus the two PVR-150s so there is a lack of options anyhow - I can't just move the PVR-150 to an open slot as there isn't one. Maybe I am better off trying to get a PCIe card as I have a couple of open slots for that, however only one is accessible.

I really can't believe that there are no resources so I am assuming this is some sort of a driver issue where the two PVR-150s are fighting over the same IRQ or memory. But how the heck would you fix this.

Disable able any serial ports you aren't using, game ports, etc. Pull both cards out and run hwclear. Try to see if you can put them (or one of them into different slots.) Or swap with any other cards. Work with just those two cards (yank out any others) until you get them working. Any newer cards you put back in will share resources better than the PVR150. The problem is you're working with older hardware (PVR150) that really wants their own resources and would have gone in a board with 5 or 6 slots way back when. You always need to consider when moving into the newer motherboard territory what older hardware you may need to replace to work or take advantage of the newer boards. (And presumably OSes) Or making sure you have OS-specific drivers for the hardware.

Thanks for the advice Gerry. If i run hwclear will it also wipe the drivers for my HD-PVRs?

I may try what you suggest if I have some time but I might be further ahead to just suck it up and buy a new card like an 1850. Wiping all of this and reinstalling may or may not work but it is likely to take a long time. My server is running WHS so there really aren't OS-specific drivers as the OS is built on Windows Server 2003.

It is strange that it won't work now but it did work a couple of months ago before I reinstalled the OS. The same slots as then and pretty much the same hardware.

I don't really need this card as a tuner - it is more to try out other things in Sage.

Yes-hwclear will also clear out your HD-PVR drivers. Sometimes this stuff is just luck. Like you said you had it working before with almost the same hardware-and that is the key. Also the order in which hardware and drivers are installed.

I bought an 1850 today - this uses a PCIe slot and has both an ATSC tuner and an analog tuner/external video inputs. I will try installing this. If it installs then this gives me several options - I can then try the PVR-150 again, although I have less need for it but maybe it will work with the different hardware config. I can also ditch my old ATSC card and use the 1850's ATSC tuner instead, freeing up a PCI slot.

Or I can throw the PVR-150 in another PC as a backup and/or network encoder. My office PC has a full license of Sage but is being used to run Sage client 99% of the time.

An update - I got around to installing the 1850 card and it works fine without conflict resources. The problem is that it isn't tuning in some of my weaker OTA channels that well so I can't yet get rid of my old OTA card. I thought newer OTA tuners were supposed to be MUCH better than old devices. My old card is a Kworld ATSC-110 that is about 4 years old and it seems to do better than the 1850 with some weak channels.
