Are you trying to view the DVDs on your cliet PC? If so, do any movie files play through Sage? Did you test the video settings and they showed fine?

I'm new so pardon my possible incorrect nomeclature

1) My laptop is running SageTV Media Center.
2) I'm not sure if that makes me a client?
3) I'm not trying to watch a DVD, I'm trying to watch DVD rips.
4) I'm not sure what test I can run. The tests during install seemed to
be for TV cards (I don't have any).

If this is on a client, instead of the SageTV server PC, then the import paths must be UNC paths so the client can read & play the files directly on its own; DVD files cannot be streamed from the server to a PC client.

Also, make sure you have a DVD-capable decoder selected in Setup -> Detailed Setup -> DVD.

I have SageTV installed on my laptop. On that laptop I have music and DVD rips in VOB format.

I'm running this program:

"C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\SageTV.exe"

All files are local for these tests.

I get the playback exception for any file that I open.

I know that Sage can see the files because I can browse the folders and it is finding the folder.jpg files.

What is somewhat frustrating is that VLC just works. I point it at a folder and everything seems to just work (other than the fact that the UI isn't as nice as Sage's

You need to install something like PowerDVD on your laptop.

Then run SageTV and select the decoder that PowerDVD installs, as described by Andy a couple of posts earlier.

Here is how I'm setup now:

I have tried all 3 options to no avail. I wonder why VLC works and why I can't use its decoder?

I downloaded PowerDVD and no new optons showed up on the above screen...but when I hit play the movie starts! I'm not sure that I understand how the codec selection is working and why PowerDVD install fixed it...

Thanks!

You needed to choose a decoder; your image shows the renderer options instead. Your decoder is set to default & that setting now sounds like it works after installing PowerDVD, which must have become the default.

Perhaps check out this FAQ too:

What's the difference between a Decoder and a Renderer?

Thanks it makes sense for the most part now (I get the difference between a decoder and a renderer). What confused me is that on my machine I was able to VOB files with some software but not with Sage. That implies that VLC might not be playing correctly with windows when it installs its codec/renderers?

All fine and good now, might be nice if the error message gave a hint that I needed to install a different decoder or if Sage was smart enough to know that it can't decode VOB's with the default sage driver.

Anyway I like the interface that sage presents, very nice. I'm getting pretty excited about it...though the next problem is organizing the library...

Thanks!

VLC uses it's own decoder and doesn't share it on the system.

Change your decoder from default to powerDVD so in the future if you install another app you need not worry about it's decoder becoming the default.
