Unhappy SageTV Service Doesn't Always Start

I run Sage on Vista SP2, with all the latest patches installed.

I'm running into an odd problem. I use the SageTV service, running in the background. Generally -- but not always -- when I reboot the system the service control program does not start. Consequently, Sage starts up in a different "mode" (because of the Vista security model, I believe) which, among other things, shows the show list that existed months ago, before I started running the Sage service in the background.

This causes a major negative Wife Appreciation Factor .

How do I go about diagnosing and/or fixing this problem?

First thing would be to check your event logs for errors related to the SageTV service. You should also enable debug logging in Sage (if you haven't already) and check the SageTV logs on a failed startup.

As a side note, from your description it's not the service control program that's failing to start; it's the service itself. The service control program (SageTVServiceControl.exe) is just the little Java applet you use to configure the service (SageTVService.exe). There's no reason to run the configuration applet every time you boot.

You're correct, what I meant was that the service itself doesn't start automatically when the computer boots.

Why would the sagetv service be trying to connect to something?

What it is telling you is that the SageTV service couldn't connect either configured as localservice or if you have it configured to start as a particular userID and password. It couldn't connect to the service. Disable the SageTV service and restart your server. Wait for your server to come and stabilize. Then go into the Srrvice Control Panel and then enable the service and tell it to startup. If it starts up OK then there is something else loading up prior to SageTV and this causing the service not to start. You may have to get a utility to "pause" the loading of the Sage service for up to 30 seconds to have it sucessfully start every time. Search the forum for some examples.
