FTDI USB NMC-2.5M Cable

Has anyone tried one of these cables for DirecTV Tuning?

http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Eva...BNullModem.htm

I ordered one and will be testing on a DirecTV H20.

Interesting. Where are you getting it from and how much does it cost?

It'll be $42ish with shipping.

Considering PatersonTech + USB adapter is ~$60 I thought I would try this.

That does sound like a good deal if you're just starting down this path. Unfortunately I've already got 4 PatersonTech devices already working (well most of the time). If it works I might be interested just because it would be much cleaner.

I had good luck with Paterson in the past. Switched to FiOS and sold the kit. Then moved and am back to DirecTV. Something changed in a firmware update a few weeks ago and it is now more sensitive in channel changing via IR. Looking at implementing full kit again it was over $200 for 4 receivers...

For the record, it did not work. This is due to the driver not being supported in the DirecTV box. There was another thread which spoke of this, but not by part number

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...87&postcount=4

I did find this site too: http://www.cooldvr.com/Buy.html

which has a "kit" prepackaged. I will buy one of their $21 units for testing.

Were you able to get more information about the kit? I'm wondering if it's just a couple of the serial-usb cables and a null modem or a single cable. If it is the former then it doesn't buy much other than getting stuff all together.

I think I am going to try and source something from China. I'll need to find a provider, but I know someone is making it.

What are thoughts on a pigtail USB A Male to RJ45 Female in about 3" length based on a PL2303 chip. Buy two, use a standard ethernet cable to connect (or would it be crossover?) Then you can custom length what is needed. The pigtail is needed to extend past the back of a computer without being too long to get in the way.
