UK Freeview Retune

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what the Freeview retune means for UK SageTV users?

http://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview/R...September-2009

What steps do we need to take if any when it happens on the 30th September?

Many Thanks!
T

Yeah, this is going to be a right royal pain in the butt. I'm going to backup my Sage install first of all then try out the new channel tuning thingy as I've not got round to trying it yet.

One bonus is the statment about Freeview HD,

The retune will pave the way for Channel Five to become as widely available on Freeview as the other terrestrial channels at digital television switchover. In addition technical preparations for future improvements to the Freeview service (such as Freeview HD) are being made.

I guess we'll need new tuners for these new HD services

Cheers

Ben

Agree with all that. Here's how I plan to do it: -

1) Use scanchannelsbdauk to generate a list of channels and frequencies after the change has take place.

2) Look for the ones which are changing - only BBC4/Cbeebies,Five,E4 and ITV4 I think.

3) Take Sage down and edit the frq files for my freeview tuners to reflect the new mux (tsid) and frequency values.

4) Restart Sage.

Scanchannels doesn't actually tell you the tsid numbers and corresponding mux names, it just groups the channels by the frequency the mux is transmitted on, but you can deduce them by looking at the tsid in the old frq file for other channels in that mux. I suspect the actual tsid values may be different in different regions, and I'm sure the frequencies are, but for Winter Hill they are: -

Mux tsid frequency
MUX1 4104 754000000 (BBC4/Cbeebies is moving here from MUXB)
MUX2 8203 834000000 (FIVE is moving here from MUXA)
MUXA 12290 850000000 (ITV4 and E4 are moving here from MUX2)
MUXB 16384 842000000
MUXC 20480 786000000
MUXD 24576 810000000

Using that information I'm fairly sure I can prepare amended frq files in advance, but I intend to do the scanchannelsbda step anyway to make sure I haven't misunderstood something

I use Digiguide and Stéphane's importer, but doing it this way I don't think I will need to make any changes to them.

Any comments on my cunning plan?

1. I use a different program, but yes, that's what I will be doing.

2. Yes. Complete list here: http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/__data/as...e_briefing.pdf

3. Yes.

3b. Make sure channel numbers are as you want them in DigiGuide.

3c. Run DG2XML on its own.

4. Yes.

4b. Re-import frq files into Stephane's importer.

4c. Run import.

Whether all the above is necessary I don't know. However, I do know the above method will work

Also, I live in the Winter Hill area, so I've got this to do another two times before Christmas

HTH,

Nick.

Thought about it some more and here's what I'll be doing.

1. Stop SageTV.
2. Backup Sage install.
3. Rescan for channels (in the AM & PM I suppose to get all channels).
4. Find what the new frequencys are for the affected channels within the .frq.
5. Copy those frequencys to the backed up Sage .frq files replacing the old frequencys only.
6. Copy the backed up file back to its original place....... bit over the top copying the whole backup over but it makes sure the only thing thats changed is the .frqs.
7. Restart Sage.

Fingers crossed all will work. No need to mess with the channel numbers, DG2XML etc....

Since I just setup a new server on 6.2.2 I got use the new channel setup pages and was impressed by the 'scan for updates' bit of it. With an existing lineup, you can scan to see updated changes and get a chance to review them before adding to your lineup, you can see when the physical channel has changed etc (Although be sure to accept the new physical channel before trying to preview it) if you don't like any of the update channel changes, it doesnt effect the existing stuff

Don't think it happens until 12.00 (midday).

Just re-tuned mine and its all working again

Only channel I can't get now is ITV3 but I don't think I'm missing anything there.

"Life" is the only thing that comes to mind (the programme, not an insult ).

I just did the usual, disconnected one of my tuners from the lineup and scanned, compared and made changes, reattached lineup. No problems.

Channels changed for me:
Five, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1 and Virgin1 (the latter may have changed a while ago, I tune it from Cable).

Well after 1.5 hours of fiddling Ive got all three tuners retuned!

Ended up doign a full rescan as so many channels had moved. Also forgot one of the DVB-T ones uses a slightly differant frequency value in the frq file, so had to do everything twice for that tuner.

Hate the new channel scanning/mapping interface. (forgot theyd changed it) Seems to take many more keypresses to get everything done.

Of course as Ive been viewing all the channels SageTV now thinks I like what ever program was showing at the time I checked the channel. So Ive several days of telling it not to record stuff ahead

I lost ITV3+1, no other real issues.

My main problem is working out which tuner is which....

I think everything is ok for me. One thing that had me very confused is that ITV2+1 is showing up as ITV - is there anyway to change its name?

(I find the whole channel tuning interface incredibly non-intuitive and confusing - is it just me?)

Cheers

I just went to the freeview site and it said that channel is 'ITV regional channel' - in England and Wales it will show ITV2+1 24 hours.

So I guess thats why its changed its name. I might have to add it back in again!

It's weird they have ITV2+1 but not ITV1+1.

Erm... whoops... yes... I was having a stressful day in the office yesterday...

I agree ITV1+1 would make a much better choice for a channel.

I also wish they'd get rid of things like QVC, The Big Deal, Pricedrop & SuperCasino and give us some proper channels instead.

While we are on the subject of retuning, has anyone got a good way of altering the channel numbers quickly?

ie. when you do a full scan the resulting .frq has the channel numbers in a scanned sequence, and not as the Logical Channel Number (LCN) ie BBC1 is 1, BBC2 is 2, ITV is 3 etc like a set top box would do

What other methods are there except editing the .frq to alter the numbers?

Maybe I've missed something obvious ?

What you need todo is remap the channel then move to "remap channel #" again, then change the logical channel number.

Same process with the old channel mapping system except less key presses.

Cant work it out - please help

I remember having nightmares setting up freeview in the first place.

Then recall that someone posted the .frq file for my region (winterhill) and then I just copied it in my directory (does this make sense or am I mistaken?).

This is the text that I had before:

I can see that I've lost Cbeebies - which will not be a good thing.

Is it as easy as someone letting me have a copy of their file ?

Hope so

Best Regards,

Jason

Where can I find the TSID, SID and Frq details for my transmitter?

I am missing a few channels, and would like to add them manually, but I have no idea where to get the details from.

I am on the Waltham transmitter (East Midlands) as I live in Derby.

Cheers ppl

I have most of the Waltham channels here. I haven't got ITV2+1 as I couldn't be bothered to do another scan, and I haven't got the shopping channels.

I hope this helps a little.

If there are any specific channels missing that aren't in my frq file let me know and I'll see if a scan here picks them up.
