HD-PVR: usb device not recognized

No matter which USB port I plug into, this is the reply I get.

One minute the HD-PVR was fine, and then it couldn't be recognized.

Anyone have this happen, and if so, what was your solution?

thanks

ps - it doesn't show up in device manager

Occam's Razor - bad USB cable from Hauppauge. Typical.

I'm assuming you've powered down the HD-PVR between those attempts with the various ports? Rebooted the computer? Tried a different USB cable?

Having tried all of those it may be bad news. I had to return my initial HD-PVR for just that reason. On rare occasions it would get "lost" and when I tried to re-init it by power cycling the HD-PVR sometimes I'd get that same issue. This became more and more frequent over the course of a couple months until it would not connect at all.
Luckily it was under warranty and they replaced it without much trouble.

You may already have tried this. This has happened to me - my devices become "unknown" devices under the USB part of the device manager. You can't "force" an unknown device to load a hauppauge driver. Hauppauge installer won't see it if you run the installer. I had to uninstall everything under the USB part of device manager, including the ports, controllers, root hubs, you name it. Unplug every USB device. Reboot. Let the OS reinstall all chipset and hub and root drivers, and then start over plugging Hauppauge stuff back in. That usually does it. And of course power down the HD-PVR in between. PVR-USB2's are the touchiest IMHO, HD-PVR somewhere in the middle. Never had a tuner stick do that to me.

Just an FWIW.

Yes, Hauppauge. Note: it was also experiencing the heat issue of the early versions too, so that may be why they replaced it so easily. If yours is still under warranty I think they'll do right by you, it definitely sounds like a hardware issue inside the HD-PVR.

A good point. I had a problem similar to that trying to install the software for tethering my phone on my last laptop and had to do a similar procedure. SCARY when you go and do it that first time though. I was online with a tech support guy and said "You want me to REMOVE MY USB ROOT HUB in device manager???" But it worked.
Do a system restore point before you do it though, just in case!

There are also device manager utilities out there that are supposed to assist you in getting your "unknown device" known again !!!

And I am actually now about ready to start trying those utilities as my computer "dumped" my HD-PVR last night randomly and I had to fight again to get it back.

On my system, when it becomes "unknown" I also lose the ability to play back H.264 files on Sage

I am also considering a x1 USB card and getting it off the P5Q premium's USB channels. I think they are flaky, personally.

I agree with the "flaky" think - no matter what I do, uninstalling - re-installing - changing USB ports . . . the things just goes dead at total random, unless my cat is walking by the unit and putting a voodoo cat hex on it. Seriously, I've never seen such an intermittent piece of hardware (as opposed to software) in my days. It's likely I'll have to return it, wait six months and try again later. Alot of people seem happy to do things like power it on and off every day, pull cables, but it in a bag and wave it over their heads while screaming like a chicken, but for $220, I want something as reliable and solid as a tivo.

I have one unit that does this. It will randomly drop out and become unrecognized. The other unit i have is rock solid and has never had it happen. I also have not upgrad3ed the firmware on either so maybe that will help with the problem unit?

I've tried both versions of software drivers on Hauppauge's recommendation. So far, I'm sticking with the voodoo hex my cat is putting on it by walking past the machine. So do you think, in your case, it's just poor quality control? Are your two units different version numbers (mine is E1 I believe - on the bottom of the unit)?

They are same revision, I believe both E1.

I can't explain it.

That is totally strange. Quality control I guess.
