We would like to archive some of our DVD's to disk.
In our Sage server we have a primary (seperate) recording drive for DVD's, TV recordings, music etc. This drive is backed up nightly to an external USB drive. The external USB drive enclosure (Macally G-S350SU ) has the ability to spin the internal drive down when not in use. We would like to rip some of our DVD collection to an external USB enclosure for archiving. The rips may not be viewed for quit a while. Therefore that external USB drive would also spin down. How could we "archive" the ripped DVD's using a seperate USB drive? How would we select THAT particular drive? Although the drive is all but dormant, we would still want to access its contents on-demand. (access causes the enclosure to spin-up the disk). Is the "archive" feature available for DVD's or just "recordings" ?? Thanks |

I'm not sure I understand the question. You can rip your DVDs to any drive you like. How you do that will depend on your ripping software. If you then add that drive as an import directory in Sage, the ripped DVDs will be visible in the Sage video library. If you want to view the contents of that drive separately from your other videos, use the Folder view in the video browser.
The "Archive" flag in the SageTV UI is for recordings only, and just determines whether they display under the "Recordings" filter or the "Archives" filter. It does not actually change the location of the file on disk.

However, SageTV plays physical DVDs or media files. I don't think it'll play a DVD ripped into a folder fully. You can play the individual VOBs but that gets annoying. I could be wrong. So once you've ripped those uncopyrighted DVDs that you own rights to, I would then convert them to a MP4(AVC) or DIVX file. I personally use Nero Recode to create AVC files. They take less space and play just fine in SageTV. |

Sage plays ripped DVDs as DVDs just fine. See Appendix I of the manual.

You know......reviewing my post, I'm not sure what my point was either!!!
We have ripped some of "our" DVD's to disk, most of the time saving only the movie. Regards |
