How are you archiving your recordings?
Hey all,
I'm wondering how you are archiving/backing up your recordings. Since the archive designation in SageTV does not actually move the files, what mechanism do you use? I would be interested in: How you're moving the recordings. Where you're moving them to. etc

not planning to archive
Disk space is very cheap these days. I have a 1 terabyte firewire external drive, dual 500 gig drives, just plan on buying more when I need the space. I am planning to get a external firewire drive and mirror the 2 drives for things that I really want to save.

I don't archive the shows. I usually purchase my favorite series when they come out on DVD.
I have burned some interesting educational programs to DVD and am keeping them in my archive. |

I would very much like something automated. I'm seriously considering Windows Home Server. But I know there are other server solutions out their too.

Archive using WHS
I am using WHS to archive/backup my shows. Works extremely well for me. I also have all my music, photo and DVD's I want to keep on WHS as well. Setup was easy, it just works. I'd recommend Gigbit Lan and upgrading the memory from 512 to 1gig. The memory upgrade really helped the response time for browsing photos and music.

You can set Favorites to AutoCompress to different drives. My wife has her own 500Gig Drive and all her favorites are moved there automatically... I then Compress them to XVID if they are older than 7 days this brings them down from over 3 gig an hour to about 350 meg. Here is a sample of the profile I use to copy MPGs. transcoder/formats/Copy-MPG\ Move\ Play=f\=dvd;MCompressionDetails\=-target dvd;[bf\=vid;f\=copy;][bf\=aud;f\=copy;]

We use a 500gig D:/Sage recording drive, (all recordings, ripped DVD'S, music, photos etc)
A 500gig USB attached drive for backup of the above. We use "secondcopy" from a company called www.centered.com to autobackup all new recordings/DVD's etc everynight at 4:00AM. Finally if we really like a recording, we burn it to DVD and delete it from the D:/Sage recording drive. Hell, if we like it a lot we buy the original.................... |
