What Does Archiving Actually Do?

What does Archiving a movie do?

I read several posts and it is not clear what is the purpose of this feature and what does it do?

Amazing this manual thing ... it actually tells you how the application works... I have even heard that there is a search function...

I kind of read that, but was still confused as to what it actually did internally.

I know the manual says that the location of the file will not be changed, but was wondering if there was more to it, like compression (zipping) or the like. I come from the day's when archiving meant long storage solutions which usually meant compacting it.

It sounds like Archiving really means "do not delete until I tell you" for the movie and nothing else.

It would be great to see Archiving do the commercial removal option by which it would ask you if you also wanted to remove the commercials (and compress). That sounds more along the lines of archving to me
