The easy way-just back up the whole SageTV directory. Install the new install and then copy the directory back over the new one. This way you'll get everything back including plugins. wiz.bin is the most improtant file. sage.properties is important for settings and plugins. But you'll need to copy the plugins back into your new install.

64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV

32 bit: C:\Program Files\SageTV

Yes.

Correct. Because you have UAC enabled. So you'll need the files from there also. What I usually do is disable UAC before installing anything on Vista. SO install the OS, disable UAC, install your apps. Make sure it is disabled BEFORE installing anything.

Where is it that I disable UAC and are there any more folders than the above mentioned that I need to backup now that I have installed sage with UAC enabled?

By the way - is the above path in the directory if I install sagetv with UAC disabled?

I don't believe it will be created if UAC is off. As far as backing up and restoring to a new windows install, I'd recommend backing both the Program Files\SageTV AND the VirtualStore\Program Files\SageTV folders seperately. Then, once you have you new windows set up, make sure UAC is disabled, install SageTV, copy the Program Files backup overtop of the SageTV install. THEN copy the VirtualStore version over top of the Program Files as well. This will make sure that the new install has all the configuration options files that you were using (The ones from the VirtualStore) in your actual Program Files folder.

Sidetracking, but Sage really needs to work around the VirtualStore issue themselves. It has caused no end to the confusion.

New plan.
Instead of reinstall on a vista I change to a PC running XP which probably do not have the virtuel store folder. Can I use the above mentioned and install both the virtuel store folder and the sagetv directory in the sagetv directory on the XP installation?

that would work, but it is advised that you don't copy over the sage.properties files, and just set it up again.. some things, like decoder choices, and the encoder settings, might be different under your XP install, and it is better to just move over your wiz.bin, and your recordings themselves, and set everything else up again from scratch.
