Native Output Scaling/Switching

Whenever I play back a file thru the extender it scales to 1080p. That's true even when I force the extender to use 720p. The same thing happens whether or not I have native output scaling enabled or disabled in Detailed Setup.

The source resolution for these files I'm playing back is 624 x 352...which is admittedly an odd resolution, but it is essentially the correct aspect ratio. Is the source resolution not being exactly 720p the cause of the "always scale to 1080p" problem I'm encountering?

How are you determining that the extender is scaling when it's locked to 720p? I've never seen anything like that. The closest thing I've seen is that if the extender can't find a matching enabled resolution it will use the highest enabled one. But even that only happens when native output switching is enabled.

Or, what exactly is happening that doesn't seem right?

Are you sure its not your TV that is upscaling to 1080p?
How are you determining that it is in fact 1080p? Does your TV give a readout of what it thinks the source resolution is? Or, are you just basing it on the fact that you have a 1080p TV and the picture is filling the whole screen?

My TV (a Vizio) has an information button that, among other things, displays the resolution currently being displayed. Whenever I use the Home Theater extender it always indicates the display is in 1080p mode. That's regardless of whether or not I have native output switching enabled or disabled.

It's possible that the TV is doing the zooming/upscaling. But it doesn't do that when, for example, I play back a plain old DVD from a DVD (not BluRay) player.

I'm wondering, though, if maybe I'm toggling the wrong option in the extender. The one I'm using is Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Multimedia -> Native Output Resolution Switching. Also, the adjacent Output Resolution option is set to 1920 x 1020p @ 60. Both of those options are in the extender (i.e., I'm working with the options displayed by the extender, not on the Sage server itself).

I seem to recall that the extender, if I don't allow it to auto-connect to the Sage server when it boots, has similar settings. I don't know what those are set to, or if they're the same settings as I'm tweaking.

Native Output switching also requires that you have all the desired resolutions enabled in the extender config menu. So if you want 720p switched to, you need 720p enabled for example.

Yes, in here, basically you need to enable everything if you really want Native Output Switching to work. If you don't, if you only have eg 1080p enabled, then the extender will basically have to fall back to that for everything.

720p (and 1080p) are both selected/configured in those settings. I used the "auto setup" feature, and it determined that my HDTV could handle a variety of resolutions.

So I don't think it's a matter of 720p not being "available". Any other thoughts?

So what exactly are you playing (resolution/format), what's it being reported as, and how is it being displayed?

I'm confused - how did you select both? I can only select one at a time.

You select both Or all 3 or 4) in the setup of the HDTheater-not in the SageTV setup. Please see the manual for both the HD Theater and SageTV.

I'm looking around in the HD Theatre setup menus and can't find it - sorry - it's not for lack of trying - but I'll keep going - I see the reference on page 4 of the HD manual, but can't find the menu item.

To get Native Output, there isn't a "native output setting" if that is what you are expecting. All you do is select the various types: 1080i, 720P, 480i, 480P and Sage will switch to use those resolutions when a video is playing back with the various types (so if you play an MPEG2 at 1080i, it will switch to 1080i).

You have to be in the "HD Theater' main menu, before it starts the extender client.

You aren't in the right menu. Okay, do this. hit power on the remote, then while powered down, hit the Home key. If you have it set to automatically connect to your sage server, you will need to hit enter then. This will take you into the menu of the standalone portion of the unit. From there, there is a setup menu. This is where you adjust the settings to your actual unit and NOT the Sage server (the setup menu in extender mode, will affect your Sage server and do some very basic setup for the HD Extender, but not this sort of stuff).

This setup menu is also where yo do your firmware upgrades to your HD200.

That's the HD100, on the HD200 you hit power and then have to stop it before it auto connects. Home jumps directly back into the extender.
