High Def, Satellite and Recording
Just wondering what folks are using to record High Def programming from the Dish Providers. And how folks have their SageTV setup to do things. I think I can handle the tunning issues I'm just unsure on what I will need to record the High Def stuff to SageTV.

Hauppague HD-PVR for the most part. Another option, I believe, is the R-5000. Search the forum or google it.

HD-PVR is the most universal method, as it will work with any HD source. R-5000 is by far the highest quality, but is not cheap. It is a modification to your Dish receiver that adds a USB port, and sends the exact same transport stream that is coming from the satellite. I'm running 1 R-5000 in a ViP-211 Dish STB, and it is extremely good quality. The cost, though, has prevented me from getting a second or third modification. I simply record from my 2nd and 3rd dish boxes via good old s-video. Still, my highest priority favorites get recorded on the R5000 modd'd box, which is most of what i end up caring about. i feel it's a good compromise... if i end up with some surplus cash burning a hole in my pocket, i might pony up for a nother mod, but for now, this seems to be working quite well.

No doubt the R-5000 has the best quality (records the source bits rather than analog recording like the HD-PVR), but the HD-PVR is pretty close. It's just a tad soft when compared directly with the source.

Thanks for the great info. I think I am now pointed in the right direction.
