Question Recording format question....

I want to play back SageTV recordings via other media extenders or on my PC directly. Does the codec required to play back SageTV recordings change with the settings or is it always going to require the same codec?

I believe I still have the ffdshow codecs installed, but I don't think I'm currently using them.

Using the current settings my NetGear EVA8000 or XBMC doesn't play the few SageTV recordings that I tried and I don't want to waste time fiddling the with the settings if nothing will affect the outcome.

What capture device are you using? That will determine what format recordings get saved in.

I've got an HDHomeRun and an Hauppauge PVR-150.

The PVR150 will use whatever recording format you've selected in the Recording Quality options. Most of these are MPEG2 formats, but some of the low-quality formats are MPEG1.

The HDHR, like all digital tuners, simply captures whatever format the provider is transmitting. For OTA broadcasts this is typically MPEG2, but for QAM cable it could be H.264 as well.

In any case, the Recording Details screen should tell you what format a given recording uses.
