Question New SageTV User?

Hi,

I'm new here and finally purchased SageTV 6.5 after playing around with the 21 day trial of v6.3.

I use my cable box to select channels/movies to record manually timed and must set SageTV to record from channel 3.
My question is that in v6.3 I was able to specify a name for the recording but no longer in v6.5, is there a way to do this or has this feature been removed?
It's a hassle to always have to open up the directory to rename the file, especially if I have several recordings in the day.

Thank you for your assistance.

Fred

what tuner card are you using?

(This won't help with your specific question, but I imagine that there might be a better setup than you are currently using)

Ideally, your tuner card would directly tune the cable channel. But, given the setup you have, you might look into an accessory that would allow Sage to control the cable box, such as the USB-UIRT

Thanks guys for your input...

It's an old HP Media Center and the tuner is a
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR PCI II (Encoder-16)

I have had problems with the drivers for this card and Windows Media Center no longer sees the card but SageTV does.

I don't mind purchasing a newer card especially if I could bypass the cable box, which card would you reccommend?

Thanks again!

Fred

An HDHomeRun might work if you have clear QAM cable channels, recording cable tv without the set top box. The HDHomeRun has dual tuners. If you want to use the set top cable box, then you could use the S-video output of the box if it has S-video output to connect to your tuner card. The cable box channels can be changed by SageTV with the USB-UIRT as was mentioned. The USB-UIRT is a device that connects to your USB connector on the computer and optically transmits the IR codes to the cable box to change the channels. Or you might be able to use the Patterson device or a USB to serial cable for a direct connection to change the channels on the cable box, if the there is a USB connector on it the cable box.

keep in mind that with the hdhomerun you only get unencrypted channels probly just locals

Your best bet I'd you don't care about hd is FireWire tunning if your cable box has FireWire then all it cost you is a cable

If you want hdtv go with the hd pvr

Fred,

I'm using that exact same card connected via composite to a set top box controlled by a USB-UIRT. It works fine, but the recording quality is not as good as with the newer cards.

Why are you using manual recordings instead of setting up the video source with a channel lineup? If you do that you will not have to worry about renaming the movies.

Thanks for your advice...
The channels that I am recording are the higher numbered channels which don't appear in the guide. I don't have trouble with the normal channels 2-125.

Am I missing something?
