Backup/Restore/upgrade OS

I had to rebuild my Sage server and when I restored my recorded shows they do not show in the recorded shows listing (it is empty). They do show up under media, videos but I was hoping to have them in the recorded listing.

I did set the recording directory to be where I restored the shows. There are no filters set either.

Using latest production version, XP.

Thanks,

Upgrade OS from XP to Vista

My Sage system currently runs on an XP platform. I'm thinking of moving the OS to Vista via a fresh install onto a new system hard drive (all of my Sage video storage folders are on separate hard drives).

If I do that, what's the best way to migrate my existing Sage installation? Other threads I've read lead me to think I might be able to just copy the existing Sage program folders over to the new installation. But that assumes the Sage install process doesn't modify system files and/or the registry. I suppose an alternative would be to build the new system, install Sage on it, and then copy my existing Sage installation on top of the new Sage install, replacing it.

In any event, I'd appreciate some advice. Thanks!

I've merged these topics because they are essentially the same question, answered by the sticky topic in this forum: FAQ: How to move files, change recording dirs, etc., which contains:

How to move SageTV to a new computer and retain all recordings

That is great info - however, I of course didn't backup the wiz.bin file when I did my rebuild - am I hosed? I tried the advanced_video_file_recovery=true in the FAQ and that didn't work... Is there a simple import function? I figured the meta data is in the file so it could be recreated...

It isn't in the mpg file. It is in the wiz.bin.

Lost hard drive with recordsings

Would this technique work for me. I lost the harddrive/raid with all my recordings on it. Don't ask its ugly, but I lost two drives of the four at the same time, what luck. I have a back up of my sage directory. Can I restore the wiz file and others then keep my favorites or will I have to fake it out with a path for a drive then delete them one by one?

Thanks
Andy

I followed the instructions about moving to a new system (XP -> Vista), but none of my recorded shows are listed. In fact, the recordings listing is totally blank.

BTW, I discovered along the way that the Sage.Properties and Wiz.bin files are stored in <sysdrive>:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SageTV. That's because Vista restricts writing to where programs are installed.

However, copying wiz.bin to that "new" location didn't work.

Suggestions?

Okay, that was really weird: copying wiz.bin into the Program Files\SageTV\SageTV directory -- even though that's >>not<< where the file was created by Sage when I did the new installation -- solved the problem.

I guess that goes to prove the old adage about a little knowledge .

But...why would Vista "force" Sage to write wiz.bin into <sysdrive>:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV but then not "honor" replacing the file at that location??

There's a FAQ: Where does SageTV store its data files in Windows Vista?

Thanks. I now recall reading that FAQ, but since I was on XP at the time I forgot about it.

That also explains why the properties file I had to change was in one place while the bin file I had to change was in the other...which was >>very<< confusing.
