Linux

Having been a long term Windows fan I have bought an old DL580 on Ebay with a view to building a Linux Sage Server.

Are any of you running Sage on Linux? I have posted some specific questions in the Linux forum but I was looking for some UK Sky related info like has anyone got Digiguide working under Linux?

Don't have Linux, but Birty's grabber supports Linux:

I think you'll have to step back to one of the purely Java importers though, like nielm's. Lots of detail here, multi-lineup one was updated relatively recently to remove xerces dependencies:

I have seen reports of people trying to run Digiguide under Wine or Crossover with limited success. It runs well in a Windows VM as that is how I use Digiguide on one of my Macs (just as Digiguide not for use with SageTV).

TBH I would just run SageTV on Windows on the DL580 unless you are looking for a challenge. Windows Home Server is a bargain packaging of Windows Server 2003 which is very stable & there is even a WHS version of SageTV. I don't run SageTV on a Proliant but I do have a dual 3.6GHz 4GB Xeon DL380 G4 running WHS. It howls like a banshee but is hidden in the cellar. It weighs nearly 25Kg, is built like a tank, has redundant fans & power supplies & is ultra reliable.

Some things to consider:
  • As far as I know, the Linux version of SageTV doesn't support resuming from low power states (hibernate/suspend).
  • The licenses for SageTV are not transferable between different OS distributions.

Its a shame I really wanted to go for a non-windows system but the lack of a trial version on Linux just makes it too risky.

I already have a Windows 2003 server but didn't want to splash out on another copy so WHS might be a cheaper alternative especially as its available on a free trial.

Not too sure what you mean by the second one. SageTV licenses stay active and working as long as you don't swap out major hardware. You can switch distros all you want.

SageTV licenses are specific to the operating system. I cannot take a Mac Client license & use it on a Windows machine which seems a bit unfair as it's OK to have 4 clients & just one license as long as you only use one client at a time but not if one of the clients is a different OS. It's even more unfair as you could even use a Windows license on the Mac if you use bootcamp or a virtual machine to run Windows.

MCE-Refugee beat me to the answer, but yeah, basically what he said.

I originally installed the Windows version of SageTV because of other considerations (child in a school that doesn't support open standards and only one computer), but since then we have expanded and I would have liked to try/move SageTV on Linux with the same licence, but was told it wasn't possible. That said, the fact that low power states on Linux aren't supported is a real deal breaker for me (being a caring-beard type with one of those things built into my brain that tells me when somebody touches the thermostat). Looks like I won't be switching to Linux on my SageTV server until nuclear fusion becomes a workable reality.

I do use placeshifter on my laptop which is running Ubuntu, and that runs great (although I have to use an older version (6.4.8) because the video doesn't show in the latest version), but my power considerations are different on a client machine (employing finger on power button technology).

Yeah, that I knew. Your term distributions sounded like you thought you were locked in to a particular Linux distribution.
