Linux Placeshifter

Was wondering if the new linux release of placeshifter supported video playback.. or its just a miniclient GUI??? I got some crazy ideas if there was a way to playback videos on linux, would open a world of opportunities...

My first experiment is to load the placeshifter on a linux xbox distribution (currently testing xdsl)

*EDIT1*
After some digging I see it uses MPlayer to maybe playback the file. I tried running the bin file, to my luck i was missing some libs.

The first one i was missing was a libasound.so.4 (or something like that). I tried installing the mplayer package from XDSL.
Now its not missing that library, now its another

./mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libXv.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So now i tried doing a symlink to the new bin of Mplayer that comes with XDSL (just to see what would happend) the mplayer from /usr/bin would run without a prob, but the one from the miniclient wouldnt run.

Linux Placeshifter

I use it and it was pretty flawless - I had to chown the files to fix an issue with running but otherwise good - the main problems I see are that my speed is about 175kbps all the time which is pretty slow but it's probably my isp and I find that the menus during playblack flash on and right off again but nothing that is a showstopper.

I'm running Full Ubuntu 6.06 and I used automatix to config all my video setup which I think is why it went so smoothly. BTW, if your checking out linux os and haven't checked out 6.06 ubuntu check it out - after a few tweaks this thing beats xp in my opinion.

Im trying to run the Placeshifter on a Xbox running linux.. the only distro I've tried so far is the DSL (damn small linux) which is ~50megs compressed. I could make it run the UI interface, but when It comes to playback I get a Playback exception. If people at sage could put a lil' more effort with this, it would be a nice plus for current members to have a maybe prebuilt linux image for xbox that has placeshifter (and maybe with IR support with the Xbox DVD remote contorl, not sure how linux interfaces it)

Linux and Placeshifter

I suspect the thing to do here would be create an addon to one of the already exisiting Linux Hacked Dashboards out there - that way you get all of the benefits including the remote support without starting from scratch . . . not sure if any include java or mplayer already but from what I've gathered on them it wouldn't be too difficult to add them

Yeah I actually managed to install it, with JRE, the only problem is getting mplayer to work (the one embedded with the placeshiffter). Im not quite sure which libs I require in order to make it play the conent. If this works, it would open another world of oportunities (remote mvp via internet, for family, friends or if anyone has 2 houses ). And with HDTV connectivity for better picture quality (which would just be noted on LAN connections where stream isnt transcoded to a lower bitrate)

Can you not install mplayer yourself? Then load the java files? From what I can gather there are several options for mplayer on the xbox

Tried that.. installed the mplayer package from DSL, i even tried deleting the mplayer executable from the Placeshifter dir, and made a symbolic link to the executable from DSL with no luck (i would guess they did some tweaks on the mplayer source code and recompiled a version for the placeshifter)

jroe I just set up an Ubuntu 6.06 box. Using Java 1.4.2_12 it seems to run nice except for the menu flashing (when a video is playing) like you were seeing. Did you ever find a way to fix that? I'm just happy it runs!

One other note, it crashes (before getting to play a video) within 5 seconds of loading with Java 1.5. The log says HotSpot detected a SIGSEGV. What version of java were you running with?

Thanks,
Chris

You might wanna contact roofus, he was supposedly working on an xbox client for sageTV. It seem like he abandoned the project but might worth a shot to ask for his expertise or share thoughts.

Rumor has it that SageTV is working on a Mac client, we might see it soon.

Don't remember if I've seen it mentioned on this forum, but it was mentioned on engadget. Definitely not concrete info as there is no source, so its stay as rumors for now.

Now that the Mac version of Sage is out in Beta, has anyone taken a second stab at this? Running Placeshifter on the xbox is a great solution gievn how cheap the original xbox is these days.
