Spinning circle in when accessing recordings
Hey guys. I'm getting a spinning circle when I access anything from the main menu. After a reboot of the server, it works fine for another 12 hours or so, then I just get another spinning circle and need to reboot again. All clients and extenders are equally affected. This wouldn't be so horrible except that the HD100 and HD200 don't recover from a server reboot without a hard restart and that is not good for WAF. This just started happening recently. I've suspected the Java update I did. So I uninstalled Java and reinstalled an older version. Update 11. I thought this fixed it but the spinning circle is back and the wife is getting upset. Any suggestions?

I too am having an issue with the spinning circle. It seems to have started randomly as I had not done any configuration changes to the system in a long time. Since I started getting the circle I have tried upgrading a few things, new SageMC, updated Java, but niether had any effect. I am getting this on all clients (PC, MVP, HD100). Seems to be very consistent when returning to the program info screen from a HD-PVR recording, but otherwise is quite random with no additional log entries.

I am also getting the spinning circle from time to time as well at least 1 or 2 times a week. This has been happening to me since I got things setup.
There is nothing else running but SageTV as a service. I have updated (just today) to java update 13 I was using 11 previously And just yesterday I updated the HD-PVR's to the latest driver/firmware to see if that helps but today it still froze up. I have just activated Debug logging in the properties file so I am hoping I will get more info to help resolve this problem. In the mean time I wish sage would keep track of "failed to record" section so that I can try to get that show later when it airs again. right now it seems that if it misses it... it is gone and I don't know what the heck was supposed to be recorded because I was trusting Sage to track it all. I would hate to have to do double duty of writing down what I set to record just in case something failed. |

Me too. I reported this in the Beta section because it just started happening but now I'm not so sure. If it's in the middle of recording something it sucks because I have to restart the service and for some reason it doesn't continue recording the program automatically - I have to manually go in and tell it to record the rest.

Some of these spinning circle issues may be related to the JVM heap size being too small. Especially when multiple extenders are being used with the SageMC STV you should probably have your JVM heap size set to no less than 500 and increasing it to 768 or higher if you have more than 2 or 3 extenders. For those not familiar with the JVM heap tweak, you'll have to use Windows regedit on the server to find and change this entry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Frey Technologies\SageTV\JVMMaxHeapSizeMB Change it to a decimal setting of 500 (or higher if you think you need SageTV to reserve more memory). And if you're running more than a couple of extenders, you'll probably want at least 2GB RAM in the SageTV Server machine.

Mine is currently set to 600, I will try upping it to 768 and see if that helps. It doesn't seem to matter though if the server has been running for a long time or short when the spinning circle starts. I'm also seeing it on my PC clients as well. Server has 2GB of RAM.
It just seemed to start out of the blue, but maybe I'm just not remembering what I might have changed when the problem started.

no change with the extra heap size.

To help diagnose issues with the spinning circle; you should turn on debug logging (now in the UI under Advanced in Detailed Setup); and also set this in your properties file:
ui/thread_hang_delay_to_dump=10000 That way whenever the circle is up for more than 10 sec (10000 milliseconds); it'll dump the stacks of the program's threads to the logfile. That'll help us a lot in determining the cause of the problem for you.

Is the option to enable debug logging also in the Detailed Setup>Advanced screen for the HD200 (running SageMC)? I didn't see it there.

The UI option to enable debug logging was added to the default UI in the v6.5.13 beta. Note that you will still need to restart SageTV for logging to start (the UI will tell you this). For the property-setting method, see this FAQ.

I was getting the spinning circle a lot until I tried the registry change to the JVMMaxHeapSizeMB. The funny thing was it was set to 0. I changed it to 768 and now everything seems to be a lot faster.
Hopefully it will continue to be fast. |

For Windows Vista 64bit the location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Frey Technologies\SageTV modify key: JVMMaxHeapSizeMB
