A few questions

I recently setup a Sage server with a HD200. So far everything seems to be working well. I do have a couple questions though.

1. DVD playback on the HD200 seems a little dark are there any settings to change the brightness of the unit? My tv has separate for each input, but live tv and recordings look fine so I'm not sure I want to mess with the settings.

2. I've tried to find the java heap settings on the server and they don't seem to be in the registry. DO I have to add the setting manually? Can the heap size be set on the HD200?

3. I know this is not supported, but has anyone had an issue with playon playback? ie stuttering on all files. It's almost like it can't buffer enough data. I've tried connecting my HD200 directly to my gigabit switch and that didn't help. I'm wondering if there's a setting I can change to buffer more of the data.

4. What and how do the settings on the server affect the HD200? At one point I had issues with the quality of the playback on the extender, so I made some changes on the server playback and it cleared up the extender. Is there any documentation on the relationship between the two?

Thanks,

Steve

so, what is a java heap and why would one want to change its settings?

I don't know exactly what it is, but it has to do with how much memory is being used... and more specifically, I can definitely say that increasing the RAM in your server and increasing the java heap size does make your extender operate faster (or at least it starts up a lot faster)... I just did this a few days ago and and difference in my HD100s is noticeable.

Read this thread about java heap size: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39829

I've got playon working and it is awesome. Hulu looks great through this!

Still no answers on my other questions though. Yes I have looked at that java heap thread and didn't find anything.

Boy, I hope my memory serves me correctly. As I recall, memory in use by a program (ie java) has availability to two types of memory for storing variable data. Stack and Heap. You might google it if you want to know more in depth, but generally you are allocating more memory for java to use.

I have the same problem with stuttering playback, like it can't buffer enough data. When I rewind a second or two it solves it for 5-10 seconds. Doesn't happen all the time, just when the wife and kids want to watch

I found a SageTV Heap entry in the registry. I changed it from 0 to 16 MB and it dumped my wiz.bin file (which has all of my recording and favorite info). Luckily I was able to recover the data from another copy.

When it's set to 0 it defaults to 256 (at least on my machine) so you need to try it set to 512. 16 is a step in the wrong direction me thinks.

Hmm. Should say that somewhere. And it shouldn't trash the wiz.bin file!!!
