Java Heap Size

If my Java heap size reads 189/266/266 and my HD100 has been acting really sluggish should I consider increasing it?

Are there negative implications of having a java heap size too big?

If I should increase it can someone include a detailed explanation of how to do it?

YES!! You are clearly maxing out your Heap. And no there aren't any negative implications other than it will use more RAM on your server. As long as you have the RAM to use, why not use it?

Thanks guys. I think that helped out. My extender doesn't seem to be so slow. I'm now reading 243/285/533.

I bumped mine up from 512 to 1GB over the weekend. Sitting at 205/291/533 right now so I guess the change will occur next reboot or service restart. I've seen the service hit 500+MB in Task Manager though.

That's somethng that is confusing me. When I watch the heap size in Sage everything looks fine. When I watch the size in process explorer it just keeps increasing until it crashes. Why is the difference growing?

So far I've only seen as high as 289/453/533. I've never looked in the task manager though. I'll have to do that.

The task manager memeory should be around the size of the total Heap used( usually a bit higher.. ). The used should be the memory Sage is currently using and will vary depending on garbage collection, but the total allocated heap will not decrease.

I have found that the Albumn cache has been the biggest issue with the heap size. Mine would constantly hit over 1GB (my max heap setting.. ) and crash. I have turned off the albumn cache and have not had a memory issue since... I would rather have the system up, than have my thumb nail images be instant...

Oh. So that's what must be going on with me. I just recently setup dvd profiler and started ripping my DVD library to HDD and I hava a lot of cover art stuff now. I just maxed out my heap again last night too. Maybe I'll have to change something up then. What was exactly that you did to turn it off? Do you not get any cover art when you browse media files or do they just not remain in a cache?

Go to Setup\SageMC\Enhancements\Cache Albumn Art and set it to Disabled. I found you need to turn it off on all extenders, because it is a per client setting... Does not matter on Sage Clients because they use thier own local heap. Then cycle Sage to clean up the memory.

The only down side is there is a slight delay when you scroll through the library on some images, but better slow images than crashed server...

I have found if you change the setting under Setup\Detailed Setup\Customize\Inactivity Timeout and OSD autohide\User Input Timeout before loading thumbnails down to 1 is speads up the thumbnail loading..

I have 1GB of memory in my WHS and fear I just may be reaching the hardware limit of making this setup work.

Memory is not too expensive and easy to add. 2GB would be the minimum I would think - more is better.

I like 2G or 3G for WHS, I avoid 4G on a 32-bit OS.

Yeah, my dilemma is spending additional money to keep old hardware alive (184-pin DDR) and likely running into additional problems down the line, or changing out for more current hardware and absorbing the immediate pain of re-creating my server (and moving ~1TB of recorded material to the new setup). Ugh!

I'd vote for the server upgrade. It might be a PITA to do it now but it'll be worse the longer you wait and add more data...

How do you get Java to report these numbers? What do each of the numbers mean? I looked, but I couldn't find any instructions.

You can find these numbers under System Info in the Help menu. I believe the numbers are Current Usage / Max Usage for this Instance / Total Available

I could be wrong though, this was discussed previously so I might be slightly off.

Update on my last Heap size increase... after the server rebooted due to an extended power outage the Service refused to start. I had to drop back to 512.

It looks like I found my problem. I had a hard drive that was failing. Once I removed it the memory acts more reasonably. Unfortunately it took a near complete failure before I realized the drive was bad.

I recently found this thread and wanted to thank the posters for the great info.

I didn't know what I was missing. Now that I changed the setting in the registry for the heap size my MPV's menus are super fast and no more waiting indicators ever.
