MP3 cataloging / organizing issue

I am a complete newb with music files. My collection is old and it's a mess.

Over the last few nights I have been using Tag&Rename to edit the meta data.
I have been changing the file names to artist - song.mp3, or if it's an album
artist - 01.song.mp3

I have been changing the genres to keep it within 5 categories cause of how crazy it gets and I like to see music by genre more than anything.

I tried playing a song by ELO, Blinded by the Light, it played fine but Sage lists it as a country song and the artist is Elton John !!! and it shows Elton Johns greatest hits cover art!

I don't mind going through my collection again if someone could tell me what to do.
rename files to ?
change meta data to ?

What ever is best to use with Sage, I assume there is some standard for this, but I should not assume anything with media and computers I suppose.

I know allot of people don't like sage for their audio management, however it's fine for me, hell I don't even have an I-pod! I only listen to music at home.

Cheers

Are you setting the Album Artist field? If not, there is a good chance to have things assigned to incorrect albums, especially when the albums have the same name such as "Greatest Hits". It seems that not all tagging apps use the Album Artist field & some call it something else.

I just used WMP to check Album Artist & other fields: right click on a song, choose Advanced Tag Editor -> Artist Info.

I loaded WMP with my library, I'll check it out, I suppose there is no automation to this.

I'm like you, I have lots of mp3 which are messed up.

I used to use a program called MusicMatch (now yahoo acquired) which used the CDDB. Don't know about now, when they bought it they changed and up and I refused to use it (just personal).

I use a program called MediaMonkey but don't like the way it uses to look up stuff. It seems to use amazon and such. But does use the freedb when you insert a CD just not the music you currently have on your system.

There are links on the bottom of the freedb wiki which this is one:
http://www.magic-tagger.com/eng/index.php

Sounds cool but have not tried it yet. There are many mp3 in my library which don't have information because there was NONE at the time and I didn't want to type.

If you use XP x86 then try "AudioShell - ID3 tag editor shell extension":

http://www.softpointer.com/AudioShell.htm

and something called "MP3 Book Helper" at:

http://mp3bookhelper.sourceforge.net/

don't be fooled by the name it is vary useful and powerfull for Music also.

Just tried magic tagger and is NOT free. But I'm trying Picard and is free. Just scanned several of my unlabeled files and did a scan on the file and found the name and artist. Very cool.

Well I have been playing around with WMP and although it's a bit tedious it seems to work well.

I tried music monkey and id3 tag and tag and rename, but I think I will stick with WMP as I am finally getting results without going crazy.

Now here is the issue, I have all the album art, WMP puts some long file name to it, it's probably only makes sense to WMP. how do I make it so Sage shows the album art per album? Does each album need to be in it's own folder with a folder.jpg?

I am using Sage MC not sure if that makes a difference for folder art.

What SageTV looks for to find album art is described on p. 83 of the v6.5 PDF manual. Please read the paragraphs carefully so a couple points there are not missed.

You don't need to have a separate folder for each album, but that can make it easier to manage all the files.

You should post in the SageMC subforum for help with that UI. The SageTV core handles album art as described in the manual, but I have no idea whether SageMC tries to do anything differently.

I read over everything it seems straight forward, I did post in the SageMc area as you suggested.

Cheers!
