Java errors Hardy 8.04 install
I am reinstalling SageTV on Hardy 8.04 Ubuntu after some serious errors on my previous install. I erased /opt/sagetv entirely. I used the Deb installer and picked the reinstall button. Some things happened during this install that did not happen during the previous install, like I had to type in the activation code directly into the synaptic installer window, the black area. (strangely, a cut and paste would not work in this area).
After synaptic was done, I installed the placeshifter the same way. Then I started the placeshifter. Anyway, the install seemed to be going very well, right up to the "set up video sources" page. At this point the placeshifter disappeared instantly without any further warning. Then I looked through my sage_tv-0.txt file and I see some interesting java errors. Things like "file not found" errors. I don't know if that is normal initialization behavior or not. I have attached the file here. Can anyone here help me figure out what went wrong? Thank you all in advance, John. |

I've fixed the above java errors
I have fixed the above noted errors and some others as well, such as no more corrupted wiz.bins (as of yet), and the EPG data loads in a matter of minutes (rather than stuck without response for 9+ hours).
1. I issued a stopsage by sudo /opt/sagetv/stopsage 2. I erased everything in /opt including /opt/sage/server and /opt/sage/client 3. I rebooted 4. I searched in synaptic package manager for java6. 5. I removed all java6 packages. (this automatically wanted to remove sagetv as well!) 6 I rebooted. 7. In synaptic I searched for Java5. 8. I installed sun-java5-bin and 7 more sun-java5.. packages sun-java5-demo..sun-java5-doc ..fonts ..jdk ..jre ..plugin ..source 9. I attempted to install the sagetv server with the .deb package, but then quit when it wanted to reinstall Java6 10. I then untarred the sagetv tarball into /opt/sagetv/server 11. I executed sudo /opt/sagetv/server/keygen.sh 12. I did sudo /opt/sagetv/server/startsage 13. I untarred the miniclient.tar.gz into /opt/sagetv/client 14 (as nonroot) I executed /opt/sagetv/client/sageclient.sh 15. I logged onto sagetv from there and the configuration was easy and quick. I can now get in and out of the placeshifter and the guide works well. I guess the lesson is that Java5 is much much better than Java6. The Sagetv install documents refer to Java 1.5 which appear hopelessly out of date, until one digs into the actual software to find out that Java 1.5 is LinuxDoubleSpeak for Java 5, and Java 1.6 is LinuxDoubleSpeak for Java6. In any case it seems that Java5 is a prerequisite and Java6 breaks SagetV. Now, my next step is to fix the sound and the flashing menus. John. |

Ubuntu 8.10 success!
I just went through an issue where my Sage PC server died, so I had to grab a new one and I chose Ubuntu 8.10.
Flawless install and I ended up doing it a few times (long story, but I kept changing my mind on which HDD and which server to use, etc). Anyway, the install was simple: 1. download *.deb 2. sudo dpkg -i sage-server*.deb (this fails because of dependencies) 3. sudo aptitude install sage-server (this figures out all dependencies and it just works) 4. repeat for sage-client (really just so I could configure locally before taking the box down to the basement - better experience for impatient family) anyway, the final time I did it, my epg wouldn't update. Eventually, from a placeshifter client on another PC, I removed all sources and readded them. EPG updated right away and all is good! |
