sleep & system standby
From reading around, what I gathered so far is that putting SageTV to sleep won't put the system into standby. Is there no way to make Sage put the system into standby automatically when I select Sleep?
I found a lot of threads on people with questions about standby, but not a lot about how they are actually doing it. |

On my machine, I have the BIOS set to allow S3 standby.
Then in windows, i go to control panel, display settings, screen saver. Click on the Power button, and set the following. Turn off monitor - 5 mins Turn off hard disks - 30 mins System Standby - 30 mins The pc will then power down after 30 mins of inactivity. It seems to work ok, though with the current motherboard I've only resurrected putting it into standby again this week. When it comes out of standby VNC doesn't work, so I have a script that I pinched from this website called monitorresume.vbs, which is in the startup folder. I added a couple of lines to it so that when it detects that the PC has resumed from standby, it stop and starts the VNC service. |

Thanks, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for.
I want to be able to put the system to sleep by pressing Power on my remote. Right now all that does is put Sage to sleep, but not the system. I don't want to have to resort to an external application to put the system into standby when I press the Power button on my remote (this is just a hack). I want Sage to put my system to sleep when I put it to sleep. This seems like a basic feature to me. |

Really, I don't think it is a good feature, what if there is a recording? Forcing standby would cancel it. I think setting a time, you can set it to 5 minutes if you like, and let the machine go into standby on it's own in the way to go. Sage will wake and record as required.

I guess I'll just end up having it do standby after 5 mins of inactivity... oh well |

I'll just go with the flow then and use the system power settings to get my system into standby. |

I love this program, I've been using it for years:
http://www.winutility.com/qsd/ You can map a keystroke to any power setting like Hibernate, Sleep, Lock Workstation etc. Then use your remote to issue that keystroke. It interferes with nothing, and sits in your tool tray with a little icon. I have my system set to Hibernate in two hours in case I forget to hit the button, but my power button hibernates the computer just as you like. Of course you can use sleep instead of hibernate if you like, system comes back on quicker, but uses a little power in sleep mode. I have several systems with different hardware configs and find hibernate is more reliable than sleep on some. EDIT: The program is totally free, no nagware etc. Good Luck! Andy

I'm not sure about their comment. I figure it's just a design decision on their part. Doing it through Windows will work for me I guess... I'll try that out now. |

You could also simply buy an extender and be done with it (as far as your client machine is concerned). Leave the Sage Server alone (with a timed sleep mode option) and use the extender for actual viewing usage. Then when you are done, you could turn it off using your remote and know that 1) it is off, and 2) it doesn't effect anything else that is going on with the server.
