How to execute external program on the server?

Hi everyone,

I'd like to trigger the execution of an external (command line) program on the server from within SageTV on any client (PC, extender, or placeshifter). Looking through the API, I found the ExecuteProcess method, which might work for Placeshifter and SD/HD extenders. But it looks like it would only execute a program locally on a PC client.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might do this? Thanks.

I never looked into starting something on the server PC from a client PC. But, just in case you didn't know this, I thought I would mention that if using service mode in Windows, a remote client (PS or extender) probably won't be able to have the service start a process unless the service is configured to be allowed to interact with the desktop.

SageTV can essentially do this now with the ExeMultiTuner plugin. Come to think of it, is the source code for the ExeMultiTuner plugin available? Or is there an API available for writing something similar?

I have found strange behavior in that the UI for the program executed by the extender is only displayed if the service is logged in as the "local system" account with desktop access. If you have the service logged in as a particular user then the UI is not shown even when you are physically logged in as the same user on the server itself (the process is shown in task manager but no UI is shown). This doesn't make much sense to me. It seems like if you are logged in as the same user you should have more access than the system account?
