Very new to this....want to do it right the first time.
I'm hoping that some of you can help me a bit. About 2 hours ago, I decided I was going to start doing my research so I could build my own DVR system, and I was surprised at how much great software and hardware is available.
I've spent some time reading through the forums, and I wanted to give you an idea of what I'd like to do, and see if it is feasible. Also, any suggestions on how to make my idea work better would be greatly appreciated.
My current setup consists of DirecTV with a DirecTV provided Tivo box. I have a second receiver in my bedroom, but it is not Tivo equipped. So all in all, a pretty simple setup.
I am thinking about upgrading to the DirecTV HD package, but from what I gather here, the tuner cards don't support satellite HD. I could be wrong, but that is the impression I'm getting.
I want to maintain my current DirecTV programming plan, and then look at upgrading it maybe towards the end of the year. What tuner card would be best for this, or would I have to buy one card now and then another whenever I switched over to HD? If so, which card would you suggest?
I want to build my system to the hilt, and I want it to be the primary DVR for my family room, but I also want it to serve up recorded shows to other TV's in the house. In other words, if we are watching and/or recording a couple of shows, I would like for the TV's in the other rooms to still be able to watch programs that have been recorded and stored on the DVR. From what I've read, connecting the DVR wirelessly to something like the MediaMVP should accomplish this. Is that correct?
Also, does anyone else use their DVR system to run PC games over the TV? I would imagine something like Battlefield 2 on a 61" DLP with surround sound would be amazing.
I can see that I'm rambling, so I will close this out. In short, I'd like to know what some of you would suggest for the ideal configuration. I'd like to keep the system wireless throughout my house, and I have to have satellite where I'm at, so cable is not an option, and I'm thinking about upgrading to the HD package later. I believe there are already some over the air local HD channels around here already. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
