6.0 & Ubuntu Feisty - cant change channel on hauppage 500

*edit* the 6.1 beta solves channel change.

p4 2.0 ghz northwood, 512 MB Ram
nvidia 6200 256MB
Hauppage pvr500
Ati Remote Wonder
Ubuntu Feisty Beta

Problems:
* xv hides osd, opengl works with slightly higher cpu and less quality filtering
* cant run compiz without 100% cpu between xserver/sage/mplayer. ubuntu's mplayer alone works fine with compiz...

Fixed problems:
* sage still mounts my hds but at least they dont show up on my desktop anymore (gconf-editor nautilus/desktop)
* high Cpu load fixed by sage stdout/err to file and not a terminal
* ati_remote + lirc + wmctrl = bitchin
* 6.1 fixes channel change
* opengl=true to fix OSD behind video
* turning off composite/aiglx/compiz to improve performance (cpu was 100% with compiz and sageclient 6.0 now its about 40% with 6.0

Does the higher cpu usage only happen when opengl=true is set?

With sage 6.1, overlay and opengl both peg my cpu at 90% with composite/compiz enabled.

That was with overlay. Note I had to kill sage there since the OSD was hidden behind the overlay....what do the mplayer status lines mean?

Now with compiz off, but composite and argbglxvisuals still enabled in xorg.conf, things are getting better.
Overlay: 30% total cpu load (but osd is hidden/flickers
GL: 45% total cpu load. I think windows & sagetv 4.0 was about this level.

All these tests are with java 1.5. I can try 1.6. It would be really nice if overlay worked, and compiz didn't suck.

Ok, I've narrowed some things down. I upgraded to java 1.6 but that wasnt the issue. The issue is launching the miniclient from a terminal without redirecting the stdout/stderr seriously impacted the cpu load. I'm talking 80-90% cpu load with it spewing to gnome-terminal vs 35% just redirecting to a file. Wow.

Also, things are not shutting down cleanly when I click the 'X' in the titlebar. An mplayer process is being left holding my alsa sound and pegging my cpu and must be kill -9d.

I also still cant stop sage from mounting drives.
I edited this to no avail:
linux/new_dev_scan_wait_period=1000000000
Please, just make an option to turn this off.

xv/overlay output still hides the osd with java 1.6. The wife says opengl looks worse than with the overlay. I think it's debatable but there is a difference, the overlay does provide some filtering.

Testing with compiz/wobbly windows
mplayer that comes with ubuntu plays fine with xv and with wobbly windows its still smooth. With gl output, cpu is higher and wobbling the window is noticably jerky. Sage miniclient with gl pegs the cpu just during playback. Technically its about 30+% mplayer, 10+% sage, and 50+% the xserver.

The overlay issue is a limitation of your video card. All nvidia cards starting with the 6000 series don't support an overlay plane anymore and simulate it so you can't have an osd plane over it.

Are you using the latest nvidia drivers?
