Hi Jere!

Awesome news! I'm not sure if this has been answered yet, but how will the newest version work with multi-core processors? I'm currently running an old single-core AthlonXP, but plan to replace that in the very near future - I haven't decided yet whether to go with a dual or quad core. I just want to make sure I have enough horsepower to reinstate ShowAnalyzer again and for it to handle MPEG4 without it breaking a sweat

Here is a quote from one of my testers:

HD is rough (as expected), but not too bad. A 31 minute show from FoodHD took about 7 minutes to scan, and all 4 cores were basically maxed out (98%+). I'm *very* happy I went with the 45nm Quad when I built the server.

SD flies by at warp speed. A 1/2 hour kids show scanned in 35 seconds!! And it looked like it was IO bound - the cores weren't more than about 60% used!

WOW.

P.S. And that was with 2 HD shows recording on the same drive.
The performance with more cores is almost linear until you start hitting the limits of your storage subsystem.

I would recommend quad core. The overall advantage quad core gives you is debatable, but with some applications there is no doubt that the more cores the better. ShowAnalyzerV1 is one of those applications.

Jere

PS. This is with absolutely no speed optimizations. I expect that SAV1 will be 2 to 3 times faster soon.

Yeah, what he said. That guy really sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Seriously, I'm *really* happy I decided to go with the 45nm quad. I've got a bunch of other stuff running on the server in VMware, so it was pretty much a no-brainer for me. Definitely a dual-core, but I'd seriously think about a quad so you don't have to monkey with it later.

I hadn't even thought about this being without optimizations. This is gonna be like microwaving instant coffee.

Cheers,

How did private testing go? Will we be seeing a 1.0 version soon?

I was wondering.. I haven't used SA in a while.. does the stock settings work well in a mixed Analog/QAM environment? Last time I uses SA it had a tough time of it with the stock settings.

Thanks!

Ver 1.0 is about to be out in a short while. I guess that in a few weeks we all know much more about how the new SA is doing.

Back to Comskip for me.. for now! The current ShowAnalyzer Beta just needs more fine tuning that I'm willing to give it.. since the new version will be out soon.. one hopes!

Looking forward to it!!!

I was one of the "not so adventurous" but I'm getting a bit anxious and may need to step into the beta cycle.

Any update on the upcoming release date?

For those trying the beta, how is it going and would you recommend others to join in?

thnks

A few weeks ago I paid to get into the SA group, but two weeks later have never received anything back giving me access to it. Big bummer for me, but I guess Jere's been busy lately.

I'm testing comskip instead at the moment and hoping the HD-PVR comskipping is released very soon for comskip.

Hmm... I also paid for SA a few weeks ago but received an email confirmation immediately with username & password. It was definitely an automagically generated response so I'd pm jere for access. If you already have the access but are commenting on receiving the beta, then you need to specifically send him a pm and request it.

Seems my questions still stand - anyone in the SA loop?

Jere seems to be busy coding away and has been silent for a few weeks. I'm running the latest beta he put out and it works "ok" though not as good as the previous .9.7 ran on my machine. If you're after the best results, I'd stick with that and wait to see what Jere comes up with when the time comes.

Yeah, ran through a bunch of Jere's Beta's and they work pretty well for everything except the h264 files. At this point with latest beta almost no commercials are getting marked in h264 files, while other files do get marked.

There's also some weird bug with his thread throttling model where you can end up with lots of SA engine.exe processes running which can really bring your box to it's knees.

No new beta in almost 3 weeks and no word either. Everyone is assuming/hoping that he's coding away.

I'd love to get in on comskip testing as soon as he has an early release I'm going to donate and get in on it.

Thanks for the feedback - seems like I'll wait and see. There's only one thing more important than commercial skipping and that's my server dependability.

I also have all my options covered - donation sent to comskip & purchase of SA. Supporting both was a no-brainer for me as this feature is very important.
