External ATSC tuner recommendations
Hi. looking for a reliable, external, standalone ATSC ota tuner.
Unit must have HDMI, optical/coax audio and component outputs. NOT looking for a networked HDHomerun tuner, etc. Have one already. Preferably one which does a good job pulling in those distant channels. Planning to pair it with either a Colossus or HDPVR recorder. Thanks.

There is at least one listed on Amazon for a good price: https://www.amazon.com/3300STB-Conve...2797364&sr=8-6
I have no idea how well it works. Note that you will need a way of changing channels on the device, just as if it is a cable box.

For some reason, the HDHomerun network tuner I have produces stuttering video when accessed via Sage. But every other tuner in the house produces quality video. Can’t figure out why Sage is not handling the Silicon Dust feed.

I would simply add that you might want to get one that offers ATSC 3.0 support. This is a new broadcast method that supports 4k and it's the wave of the future. It's not currently available in most of the country, but it is coming and will eventually be the standard method for OTA broadcast. Since you are in the market for a tuner, you might as well get one that is compatible. It will be ATSC 1.0 backwards compatible as well, so you can use it now even if your market hasn't switched to 3.0

All good points. Has anyone who owns a HDHomerun product found their tuners are weak compared to built-ins from Samsung, Sony, Vizio etc.?

I find it just the opposite they are much better as they have a built in AMP.. SageTV is not the best to see how well your tuners work... As I also get no signal sometimes even when using SageTV with OPENDCT ... but every other APP has no problem. I always use the HDhomeRun APP before saying the tuning is weak.

I don't consider the HDHR a great tuner. When I was doing direct tuner comparisons I've had better experience with an ATI digital tuner (decidely superior) and a Hauppauge tuner on the same antenna. Martin |
