Win 10 troubles with HDHomeRun (after windows updates)

So somewhere in the last ~week my main pc (windows 10 1909) stopped working for recording live tv from the HDHomeRun that has been working just fine for ~7 years. I noticed this yesterday, today I booted up my "old main pc" which in windows 10 1903 and from the HD300 live TV works a charm.

I have made zero configuration changes in the last week. But windows has installed a couple of patches on the 9th.

When I use the HDHomeRun Config GUI, I can watch live tv via Media Player, and the HDHR CU shows the cards getting tuned, and network data transfers, as does windows Task Manager, when I tell Sage to watch live TV I see in the config gui that the cards are tuned, but no traffic, and Task Manager again shows not traffic.

I have fiddled the user that Sage service starts as with no luck.

I don't really want to run the old PC as it's super loud, but it is good to see it can all work, and if it is windows updates, it will soon be broken also. I uninstalled the last two updates, but cannot uninstall the security updates, so cannot roll all changes back.

But any help/advise would be awesome.

Only other difference betweem the boxes is also the old PC was a sage7 install with an sage9 over install (thus 32bit) while the new PC is a clean 64bit sage9 install

Which model HDHR are you using? Cable or OTA?

And not sure if it matters, but what version of HDHR software/firmware are you running? Have you installed the latest version that just came out recently?

Can you post a section of the sagetv_0.txt file after you try to tune a channel in? There may be some clues in there.

I am unsure this will add to the conversation. I had a similar issue when updating to v2004 from v1909. After the update, SageTV v9 didn't function. This was several months ago and I forget just exactly what didn't work... whether it was the Server or the Client or both.

Anyway, my quicky solution was to restore the computer from a full backup. This is a machine that is used exclusively for SageTV so I simply forgot about it since STV functions perfectly under Windows 10 v1909.

I am, however, concerned that Microsoft will at some point force this update on me.

Yes, Microsoft moving the platform in there woke forced nature is rather scary from a "it's just working, can we leave it alone" perspective.

I did re-install 64bit Sage 9 (repair) in case it was something that might help. I had also updated the HDHomeRun drivers, the device itself is still running the Feb 2020 firmware, as it didn't get an update in the update.

Code:
HDHomeRun DUAL
Model: HDHR3-DT
Device ID: 11112583
Firmware: 20200225
I am starting to ponder running Sage in ether via Docker or something of the like under Windows subsystem for Linux..

Or working out if there is someway to use a "network capture" wrapper around the hdhomerun_config.exe apps via a wrapper if someone has some java wrapper that could be retargeted.

Not sure if these are crazy plans. My wife really likes watch the news when she wants (there are on demand apps that run on the TV (Android TV)) so it's mostly about skipping ads and being able to start when she wants to..

Have you tried using OpenDCT? It effectively serves as a "network capture wrapper" between Sage and network capture devices including the HDHR series. It wouldn't take all that long to get it set up and give it a try.

I had not, but that is the exact kinds "thing to try" I was hoping to have suggested, I will give that a bash tonight. I had seen mention of OpenDCT but had not connected the dots, it might help here..

hmm, in OpenDCT Console, when I go to configure the new found source, I see
Code:
INFO | jvm 1 | 2020/09/14 20:11:58.211 | 20:11:58.130 [SageTVSocketServer-60:9000] WARN SageTVSocketServer - IPv6 connection detected. This is an untested configuration.
and I get the error

Code:
Watch request failed. ERROR (-12): There was a null object requested to the playback

So got this working for me by:

1. Installing OpenDCT
2. Setting my HDHomeRun to BDA Compatibility Mode "Next PVR"
3. Setting my HDHomeRun to Virtual Channel Table mode "Inject TVCT"
3. Fixing a bug in OpenDCT so channel scans for for EU-BCAST devices
4. recode my channels for the form I had used for the last 7 years
8764-28-1200 -> 34-1 this channel seems to have moved and in the SageTV internal driver it expects to call in 28 but 34 in then set (as seen in HDHomeRun Config GUI). Which is saying I used to refer to them by the code used in the Tune collumn of HDHomeRun Setup, but now the Guide Number colunm is need.

I have no clue if ether of the BDA Compatibility Mode or Virtual Channel Table mode setting being different to my prior setting of "default" has made any different. But for today it's working.

I might experiment later, as I have wanted to know what they do.

I can tell you that you do not need the HDHomeRun software to use OpenDCT with your HDHomeRun tuners. It implements the communication protocol in Java.
