Do plugins need to be manually updated?

Whenever I see a blue "i" at the top of the screen it usually means a new OTA channel has been added or a plugin update. I always update the plugin. However, when I went to look at my plugins I counted 18 that said "Update Available" or something like that. For example, my version of Comskip is 80.042.002 and was last modified in 2016. A google search reveals a more recent version.

Should I be manually updating these?

I don't want to mess with it and break something but I also don't want to miss out on additional features and functionality.

<admin, feel free to move this if there's a better location>

thx

I think you do have to manually update them. Not many are being maintained these days so it is surprising that there are so many updates.
