Thanx for all the fish!

Yesterday I pulled the plug on my Sage server, after over a decade of faithful service (different hardware from the original installation, but same great software).

Thanx to Frey Technologies, the original developers of SageTV, and all the people who have helped over the years by answering questions and furthering development once the software went open source (and before, too, with add ons and plugins).

Of all the software I've ever purchased, going back over almost 40 years, I'd have to say SageTV was at the very top of the list when it came to value for the money. Not to mention for having a user interface that was both years ahead of its time (and still is, in many ways, IMHO) and spouse friendly.

In the end, it wasn't even a limitation of SageTV that caused me to pull the plug. It's just that we've switched almost all of our video consumption to streaming-over-fiber, and paying Comcast its outrageous fees no longer made sense.

Again, thanx to everyone here for a fantastic ride!

- Mark

To quote Bugs Bunny;
Fair thee well Hiawatha, fair thee well.

I hope there continues to be enough interested and talented members to not only maintain, but develop features so that Sage remains relevant as user habits and technologies evolve.

I definitely agree about its value. Though I've being using Sage for close to 10 years, I'm still impressed with the user interface. I feel like an anachronism though, since I don't stream or subscribe to anything OTT; just a humble HTPC user who, as an old-timer cable cutter, finds their viewing needs met with free TV.

However, it looks like the folks from Frey Technologies have turned into pool boys.

It is hard to see who is going to do all of the developments as we have just lost one of the main developers - stuckless. Through the last few years they have been falling by the wayside, one by one.

Yes, this really is worrisome. I find streaming complicated, messy, inconsistent and just as expensive as cable. I’ll be sticking with SageTV and my Tivo’s for a while yet, but every time Microsoft or JAVA release an update, it gives me the willies...

That is why I left my SageTV server on Windows 7. I am able to turn off automatic updates. The system is frozen at a working level.

Got you beat, sort of. My network encoder PC for capturing DirecTV is still running XP (w/Service Pack 3!) for the same reason.

(the sort of is because my main SageTV server is on Windows 10)
