From Windows to Docker to Ubuntu VM
I have been running Sage for many years on Windows 32 bit due to Firewire tuning of my two STBs attached to two Hauppauge HD PVRs. I wanted to consolidate all my media apps, including Sage into my unRAID box and upgrade Windows to 64 bits. I first tried Docker using the DVB plugin. Everything worked except my Hauppauge quad tuner, which I'm using for OTA channels, wouldn't tune any channels.
Next I tried running a Windows VM with the Quad tuner as a network encoder. It worked but everything seemed sluggish.
Finally, I decided to run Sage from the Ubuntu Server VM I have been running for years with various media apps. To get my Firewire and my Quad tuner recognized by Ubuntu, I had to stub the devices in syslinux. Hauupage has Ubuntu drivers for the Quad card which I installed. The HD PVRs and Quad Tuner were recognized and I installed them as encoders.
Once again my Quad tuner couldn't tune any channels. Since it was able to do so in my Windows VM I suspected the DVB plugin was initalizing it as a DVB adapter. I reverted to sock unRAID, started my Windows VM and the Card could once again tune channels. Fortunately it can now also tune in my Ubuntu Vm.
At least for now I have a Windows 64 bit box and sage Running in my unRAID Ubuntu VM with 2 HD PVRs with Firewire tuning and one Hauppauge Quad tuner. Lastly, 5.1 sound works with both the PVRs and the Quad tuner.
