Moving to Unraid with Docker from Windows Sage V9

Hi

I am considering making the switch. I have used Unraid in the past but not for a few years.

My question is whether it will be easy to retain my synology NAS shares as my SageTV recording directories. I have too large a library (approaching 11 TB) to move it all to unraid in any realistic timeframe.

Is there an easy way to reference external NAS drives within Unraid/Docker Sage?

Thanks -- Sorry if this has been discussed here already, but if it has I sure can't find it.

Bill

Sage should still be able to browse to your NAS shares, and you can still set them as your recording or import folders in sage.

Just like you don't need your recording on the windows box.
UNC is your friend. Just need to ensure the userid for the sagetv service has access to your existing NAS

In this instance how would you mount the drives on the unRAID box? Using nfs?

Thanks -- my linux experience is limited to Unraid several years ago, and I did not have to link external drives. Thanks for clarifying that it should be easy to do.

Thanks for the tip - I will get back here if I have any trouble once I get it running.

Since in a seperate NAS you wouldn't mount them

You would do them via Network (smb/unc)
Keep selecting up directory until you see option for network, then find the external NAS then drill down from there to where you want to go
Same as I do on my Windows machines to get the directories on unRaid

Isn't smb a protocol developed to allow Linux machines to attach to Windows, whereas nfs is used for Linux to Linux connections?

Sort of... sage only browses samba shares, so that's what you use for accessing remote shares, whether they are hosted on linux or windows. (linux NAS's would all expose samba shares).

SMB is an application layer networking protocol most commonly known as how you access remote file shares on Windows.

SAMBA is a suite that implements SMB on many non-Windows platforms. It is not a Microsoft product and is not a part of Windows.

UNC is a Microsoft convention that only works in Windows. In other operating systems the share always needs to be mounted. Sometimes the OS or software in question is doing the mounting transparently, but it's still being mounted somewhere.

NFS is mostly associated with Unix/Linux and is usually the preferred way to share files between those OS's. In a mixed environment, Windows also supports NFS, but you need to enable the feature and use some command line tools to mount the desired share. UNC does not apply here. For quick one off copies, scp is a little more agile.

SAMBA and SMB are not interchangeable nouns. SMB and CIFS are not interchangeable unless you're talking about SMBv1.

I know I'm not a definitive source, but I thought we could use some more firm definitions.

I've never been able to browse to an SMB share since switching from Windows to unRAID. The only way I've been able to do it is to use the Unassigned Devices plug-in for unRAID to mount SMB shares.

I did check before posting my first response here, and I had no problem browsing the shares on the unraid server, and on my desktop. I do think there might have been some issues in the early unraid setups, but the current one seems to work just fine (for me at least).

I see. I'd never browsed to the root structure that contains "Network". I was trying to Specify the "smb://" path directly. That doesn't seem to work but browsing from the "Network" folder does work.

Not being able to directly use smb:// is something that should be fixed at some point in time.

Is this a Docker probem or a SageTV problem, or a Linux problem?

I think I tracked it down one time to a SageTV on Linux problem, but honestly don't remember exactly what it involved. Something about the way SageTV stores the smb based mount points for path translation I think.

It's a SageTV problem. It has to do with being able to just go directly to a server and share without navigating there. You have to go through Network.

If I recall it works on Windows to Specify a UNC path but the same doesn't work on Linux for specifying an SMB URL.
