Help with connflict resolution

Recently Sage has been giving me the conflict icon and showing a conflict that in the past I think it would be able to resolve on it's own.

The conflict is for MTV's "The Challenge" on Tuesdays at 9pm. Sage is reporting a conflict with another favorite "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" which airs at the same time and about 6 others times. The favorite for TRHoBH is First Run & ReRun/Any Channel.

1) Why is the scheduler not choosing another non-conflicting airing? There are non-conflicting airings, I have been choosing them manually to resolve the conflict.

2) What can I do to debug this?

Just a random guess but perhaps the repeats are too far out for the scheduler to work with them. You might also have other, higher priority, programs that record or padding that overlaps at those same times, which would prevent it from recording the other time slots, OR, the alternate airings are of episodes already recorded or watched.

Thanks. Those are not it.... The show airs first 9pm on Tuesday and re-airs 3 more times in the next 12 hours when no other shows are airing.

I took a look at the Scheduler code and there is a property 'scheduler_debug' that when set in Sage.properties to true will log extra info in the log file. I will try that when I get some down time, and see if I can figure out why the simple conflict resolution is not happening.

I would also suggest looking closely at the EPG data for each of the airings of the two conflicting shows. Is it exactly the same? Same show title, same episode title, same episode ID? Are the flags the same - HD, 1st run, Watched,etc? It’s possible that Sage is treating those future airings as a different episode

I would also take a close look at the favorite settings for these two shows. Are there any restrictions such as limiting to a specific channel or time slot?

Also, is there any chance that those future airings have other conflicts?

I spent some time looking into this. The scheduler was "abandoning early" due to "extensive complexity".

I increased the insane permute count in Sage.properties to :

scheduler/limiter_insane_permute_count=5000000.0

This enabled the scheduler to de-conflict. It did not add a considerable amount of time to the scheduler.

The below is from the log. I'm not sure why the total permutations would total 4.5 Million for this deconfliction, where the default 'insane' limit is 10000.

I'm not sure, but is seems the permutation is calculated by the number of airings * the number of tuners * the previous # of permutations. This number can get big fast.

In this case with the insane limit set at 5M (500 times default) , the scheduler completed in .05 seconds. It seems to be a disconnect between insane and do-able.

What was “insane” for computers 10 years ago probably isn’t so much anymore.

It could also be that the worse case time really is insane but yours found the solution early in the process in this instance.

Also, we should remember SageTV was running on a rather low power system when it was used on Fiber and Jeff's still running an Athlon XP, so this probably is still an insane number for him. It could benefit us to change this to a much higher limit or something based on your detected computer capabilities.

Which isn't to mention that it was a single-threaded process back then as well. Something I recall you making changes to. So it can throw more processing resources at it now than it could just a couple years ago.

I have been having similar problems, but I couldn't find in my logs any references to permutations. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong file? I looked in Sage1.txt, since I didn't have any recent .log files. I did just up my count by 10 times, to see what a fairly conservative approach might do. I assume I'll need to wait until the next schedule-run to see if I end up with fewer conflicts. What I am finding in general, though, is that many of the conflicts resolve themselves if I wait until it's closer to the date on which the offending shows are to air, but also that shows that are not in my favorites or manual recordings are showing up as "in conflict" for a while.
