Newbie - Resolution and PUA?

I'm just trying out the windows version trial and I can't seem to figure out how to change the display resolution. I have a PB6210 projector and need to feed it VGA at either 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Is there a way to have SageTV display video at a different resolution than the desktop or does it just use the desktop res?

Second, the play DVD doesn't seem to let me fast forward or choose to just go directly to the movie. I'm also trying out PowerDVD and it ignores PUAs and lets me also choose to go right to the movie. Am I missing something?

Is there a way to tell SageTV to use PowerDVD to play movies so I can do everything with a remote instead of having a mouse and keyboard handy?

If it doesn't ignore PUAs and won't let me go directly to the movie then what benefit is there in using SageTV? I can buy a blu-ray player that will play encrypted DVD/Blu-ray as well as force me to sit through previews and warnings over and over while SageTV does the same but without being able to read encrypted discs.

No there is not. And I'm not sure why you'd want to.

Sage's DVD player "follows the rules", you'll have to use some 3rd party software to remove those if you don't want to be stuck with them.

What do you mean? Playing a DVD via the Play DVD option should be controlled the same way as the rest of the Sage UI (ie by remote).

Sage will play encrypted discs if you install a DVD decoder pack (which is installed with PowerDVD and most other DVD players).

As for why Sage, DVD players don't record TV, or provide media library functionality, or extenders, or....

For me the reason to go to a computer based system is to bypass PUAs. There's nothing worth recording on television and I don't download pirated movies so I've no need to have DVDs ripped to disk. Sage can't do the one simple little thing I need it to do - let me skip the stupid PUAs.

Sage isn't a DVD Player, it's PVR with media management/playback functions.

If you want a DVD Player look at ThteaterTek, it's probably the best. That said it won't ignore PUOs either without something like AnyDVD running. PowerDVD shouln't be ignoring them either, nor any licensed DVD software.

So you are thinking of buying SageTV simply as your DVD playing software? And you want it to allow you to bypass PUAs when playing the DVD straight off the disc? I don't think SageTV is what you want. What brought you to even choose SageTV in the first place? The ability to watch (unripped, from disc) DVDs is, I dunno, probably the 78th best feature of SageTV. If you don't care about other media, about the PVR functionality, about the ability to have your DVDs (and other media) ripped to your PC so that you don't have to put a disc in a player.... I guess I don't know why you would choose SageTV.

Edit: Stanger beat me to it...
