webm videos playback

With the awesome YouTube plugin, I'm grabbing loads of great stuff, but, a lot of it is webm video content.
The SageTV server does not like playing back this stuff directly, likely due to a codec issue.
I have VLC Media Player installed on the server, and it plays back webm content just fine, so the codecs must be installed on the system somewhere.

Is it possible to have SageTV server software play back these files directly somehow without any extra codec installations?

media extenders play the material without incident

What I get is "There was a playback error in playback. Details: sage.PlaybackException"

VLC provides all of its own codecs independent of what Windows provides (I'm not even sure it can use a Windows codec). That means that if it plays in VLC, it's not guaranteed to work in SageTV since SageTV uses the Windows codecs.

I think that you'll have to break down and install something. LAV Filters seems popular around here and it looks like it supports WebM. It also looks like WebM has a DirectShow Filter install that would do what you want and (I'm guessing) not have to change any configuration on your server to just work for WebM.
