HDHR software scan no channels

Hi all,
As some know, I recently had to re-install my server. I'm now stuck on my HDHR-dual. Yes, it's older and that's part of my questions. I know this isn't a Silicon Dust forum but, hopefully someone had the same problem and can help.

I am running Win7 64bit with Sage v9

First, let me start by saying this was working perfectly before my system crash 2 days ago. I was using it to get my local HD channels plus a few others. I could never understand what QAM and ATSC etc mean.

I used the HDHomeRun software version 20161119. It sees the tuners but, when I scan there are no channels. So, I read somewhere that someone tried an older software version. I now have 20140604 installed. Still no channels during scan. This is scanning using US-bcst option in the config GUI. When I scanned using us-cable, I get about 60 channels and they can be viewed but none are HD.

So, I was prepared to get an newer HDHR. I saw there are 3 different models. I was going to go get a HDHRConnect today at a local Micro Center but, they are sold out. The second part of my question is do I need to get a new one and if so, which one?

Thanks in advance

QAM means you are getting your signal from a cable company for that tuner.
ATSC means you are getting your signal from an antenna for that tuner.

You need that set correctly when you scan or you will get NO channels scanned.

us-bcst (stands for US Broadcast) is ATSC tuning. This is over-the-air broadcast in north america (and some other areas, like korea), and would be what you would use if you have it connected to an antenna.

us-cable, us-hrc, us-irc are used for QAM, which is what cable operators send down their lines, so if you are hooked up to the cable, you'd choose one of those - the cable, hrc, or irc choise are different frequency maps (channel 2 = xxx MHz, and so on). Most operators use hrc, but choose the one that tunes in the channels.

Of course, all that being said, I don't think you actually have to worry about that setting when it is being used by SageTV. The place you really need to have it set right is in the HDHomeRun Setup program, where you have to set each input to either Digital Antenna, or Digital Cable, as appropriate, and then make sure in SageTV when you are adding the source whether you are tuning antenna or cable.

Bob - Thank you for that straight to the point explanation. That's perfect. I swear, everytime I read about it, they over complicate it or I am just having brain block to it.

Fuzzy - Thank you too. I'm going to try that right now.

OMG...SOMETHING WORKED. YAY!!

So, I scanned this time and I have channels!!! You have no idea how happy I am right now. I swear I tried so many different combinations and nothing worked.

I am using the older version of software 20140604.
In the HDHR GUI I selected us-cable then the right arrow button.
I could see the signal strength finally

Went to the HDHomeRun Setup.
Set my location (again, older version of software)
Application tab: SageTV
Tuners: Digital Cable: Scan worked!!

Now to remember how to map them. Damn, it's been so long.

This is also for my future reference

Thanks so much Fuzzy and everyone!!

I have one of these and a prime. I had issues with the HDHR-US when I upgraded for the prime. They both got upgraded. The firmware version was 20150615 and I lost animation for SD channels in Sage.

This box can have it's firmware downgraded by installing an older version, the prime I am told can not per "CableCard" rules.

For those who own both boxes, I suggest uplugging the HDHR-US during the upgrade so only the prime is upgraded. Then reconnect and run the setup scans.

While I can not say exactly what firmware contained the last change, these "legacy" boxes are getting no new code applied (Per Silicon dust) so upgrading gets you little other than the newer view app.

Having same problem - no solution found so far

Same issue here... no channels found in scan. Very frustrating. HDHomerun software finds the channels just fine. Sage, zippo. Don't know what else to try.
