I'm so close to loving this... But

I've been looking for a replacement for WMC for awhile now. I simply want to watch live/record OTA content. I've tried all the different PC PVR products out there but haven't liked any of them. SageTV v9 running on windows is almost perfect.

One huge problem I can't seem to solve though is the following:

I want to let my PC continue to run and record 24/7, but I don't want to leave my television powered on. Every time I turn off my Samsung TV Sage stops working correctly and I'm forced to reboot the PC to restore full functionality. It is somehow related to the audio renderer I think. I have picked all the renderers listed, including the Samsung one, but no solution has surfaced.

Can you post the SageTV log file from when this happens? It's the sagetv_0.txt file in the SageTV program folder, be sure you turn on Debug Logging in Detailed Setup->Advavnced first so it actually creates the file.

I can tell you from experience that client PC installs of sage work very well if you know what to do.

In my case if my tv turned off when connected via HDMI (while playing live or recorded TV) the PC would basically think there was no longer a monitor connected so the video renderer would freak out and I'd have to close sage and reopen to get things back to normal.

This wasn't specific to sage either. Plex if left open would render itself in a smaller window and not work until restarted either.

These flaky things are one reason the Android TV clients have worked so well for me. These issues are no longer present.

I can help with this, but I need to know what video card vendor you are using (intel, amd, nvidia) as this behavior is dependent on that for some reason. I had this issue when using intel graphics, but not AMD (IIRC).

I appreciate the responses. I borrowed a Vizio TV and Sage works perfectly, So apparently it is a problem with Samsung displays?

In both cases I am simply connected via HDMI.

I will attach the log file and hopefully someone can help me with this.

Attached is the log file.

I am using Windows 10 on a NUC PC.
The processor is an Intel Core i5-5250U @ 1.60GHz
The graphics is Intel HD Graphics 6000

I have tried two separate Samsung displays and both fail if I turn-off and then turn-on the power. Using a Vizio display works perfectly.

I have seen tricks to disable the Hot Plug Detect pin on the HDMI cable so the video card can't detect if the monitor is there or now. Whether this allows sage to keep on rendering or not I'm not sure.

I bought a device ages ago that captures the EDID and always presents it to the PC so it never knows it's unplugged. Forget the name of the device, sorry.

Have you made sure all the HDMI CEC (I think Samsung calls it "Anynet") stuff is disabled in the TVs?

I don't see any actual failures in the log file...which I should if an hs_err_pid file was generated for that session.

And what's likely different between the TV models is that the Vizio is probably showing itself as still connected to the upstream device when it is powered off, while the Samsung TV is not. That causes the video card to freak out when the Samsung TV powers off...but not the Vizio.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you are keeping sagetv playing when turning off the TV?

You guys are spot on. It does indeed think the samsung TV is no longer attached to the PC when the TV is turned off.

I was hoping the HDMI-CEC being disabled would resolve this problem, however, there doesn't seem to be an option to disable it. And even if I do disable it that may not solve the problem. I will contact Samsung to see what they say.

I wish I could get that EDID device. let me know if you remember how you obtained that.

Try getting an HDMI splitter. Might sound like an odd suggestion, but it should make the PC think that a monitor is always connected.

I went ahead and bought a 'Monitor Detect Killer'. I think that should do the trick.

Hopefully that will fix it, but you might also want to check if there's a firmware update for your TV.

Search for 'remove edid override' on eBay. $25, seller in Canada. Been using one for years.

The Gefen HDMI Detective Plus will fix your problems. I have one and it works wonderfully!
