Audio/Video Sync on Plex

I know there are some other Plex users here, so I'll try posting here, since the Plex forums are rarely helpful.

Is anyone else running into major audio/video sync problems with Plex when it transcodes recordings (in my case, HDHR recordings)? Every time I play back a recording I need to try a few different transcoding quality settings before I find one that provides decent AV sync. There are no consistent patterns. Sometimes 720p material syncs best with 720p 4mbps, sometimes at 3mbps. 1080i material is all over the place, although usually the 720p transcoding settings work better than the 1080 settings.

I was really hoping that Plex DVR would bring about better transcoding support for mpeg2 ts files, but so far that hasn't really panned out for me.

Anyone? I know there are some Plex users out there.

Doing a little more testing, it looks like I mainly have AV sync problems with HDHR Connect recordings, not recordings from my HDHR Prime that go througH OpenDCT. Would it make sense to use OpenDCT with my HDHR Connect?

I honestly don't have issues with any of my recordings and Plex. Including mpeg2 from my HDHR.

Have you tried changing the transcoding settings on the plex server?

Hmmm...

The only transcoding settings I know of in Plex now are the transcoder quality settings. And yes, they do have an impact. 720p settings tend to work the best, although oddly the 3mbps setting might work better than the 4mbps setting or vice versa, depending on the file.

Do you happen to know if you did anything special with your HDHR setup? I'm not sure what settings there are, although I remember a configuration setting for program stream vs. transport stream. I thought I was recording everything as transport streams, although now I see my HDHR Prime recordings are transport streams, while my HDHR Connect recordings are program streams. What are you recording as?

I meant the transcoding settings on the server itself. There is a section that asks about quality, background process and the like. See if changing any of those helps.

I didn't really do anything special for my HDHR. Sage records and they show in plex. That's about it.

Yeah, I've played with those a bit. I think transcoder quality is the main one. Plex used to have a couple different transcoders, but they dropped the old one a year or so ago. The old one tended to work a little better for me, but the new one is a lot faster at starting and skipping in streams. But at this point you can't even configure it to use the old one.

Maybe I'll ask around in the hardware forum a bit over what people are using with HDHRs.

Closest thing I experienced was unique to the TCL TV set with built-in Roku Player where certain specific recordings, and seemingly only from certain networks, would have bizarre audio-sync issues.

Never did figure out what was doing it, when Plex moved things to their own player at the start of the year, the issue went away.
