Falling behind in the java department

Last night I tried out the latest 9.0.9 version and it failed to start due to an out of data java version (I suspect). I am running java 1.6_10 on a Vista 64-bit system. For a while I have noticed that some plugins require java version 1.7 or higher.

I would like to upgrade java to the oldest version I can get away with - I assume it is version 1.7? When I get on java's archived download list, I assume this means java SE 7 - is this correct?

What am I downloading? The Java SE Runtime Environment? Or the Server JRE (Java SE Runtime Environment)?

Thanks.

Some things are targeting 8. I had to go from 7u80 to the latest 8 at the time because a plugin required it, (I believe a Phoenix core service). If you use the web server this breaks the /apps screen as well as various functions on the mobile web interface. 7u80 had been stable for me for a long time. Just make sure that any plugins you use do not have a JAVA 8 requirement.

You just need the Java SE Runtime Environment:
