Unhappy Sage got issues, see post #8 for latest

I'm in a huge bind here. Im about to go on travel for almost 2 weeks. LIke an idiot, I was watching TV when the family went to sleep early and thought, heck, why not do some updates.

I updated to the latest Catalyst Control Center and things went south. First I couldn't get sound to work. I eventually rolled back the audio driver.

Then I noticed that when I went to play ripped DVDs on our server, the play bar was purple.

The big thing, though, is that ripped Blu-rays (yes, I own the discs) won't play at all. They are on a file server and the drives are just mapped. Sage sees how long the move is, but it just won't play.

I tried the various renderer settings, and got the purple band to go away, but then dvd's quit playing (I forget which settings this all happened...EVR, VMR9. I think overlay was the only thing that worked)

Then I tried to uninstall Catalyst and start over. BUt now SageTV wont even start. It get's up to saying "Waiting for Sage to finish initialization" then just quits.

What do I do?

Help. I've got just a very basic Sage setup. No fancy add-ins at all. Just Sage (the latest version before Google bought it).

I've got to get this working quick.

Edited to add log file. It looks like there's a java error.

I would completely shutdown Sage look for any java.exe running in task manager shut them down. The I would uninstall Java and reinstall java. Then try running sage again.

nyplayer, sage doesn't run as service. So when it's dead...it's dead.

But I did, indeed, uninstall java version 1.6 and updated it.

Now it says it's 'initializing the user interface'...opens a black window for a split second, then closes.

It looks like a similar error.

Any ideas?

Won't Run

Hey guys...long time Sage user here. So I've got another post almost identidal to this in the olde Sage software forums, but thought I'd post here too to try to get it resolved.

I updated catalyst control center and sage v7 started acting flakey...mainly blu-rays won't play and dvds had pink color in the progress bar.

I tried rollling things back, but then version 7 wouldn't load any more.

I just updated to the latest Java version, but still no joy.

FOr kicks I thought I'd try installing SageV9. Downloaded SageTVSetup_9.0.4.232_RC1.000

But it seems to do the same thing. It loads but then fails. I also just went out and downloaded the LavFilters just in case something happened to a decoder. But still no joy.

Attached is the error log. It seems there's still some kind of Java error.

Any ideas?

Ok, update. Kind of got it working. I actually installed V9 and it still didn't work

So I went back through and reinstalled drivers for my MOBO. Still no joy.

Then I uninstalled java.
Then I reinstalled AMD catalyst and drivers.
Then I installed newest java.

Now I'm up and running...I think.
Imported my old wiz.bin and can see the old recordings
Hauppauge tuner boards aren't tuning.
When I try to play a recorded video, it freezes. It won't play them.
When I go to play a DVD the video description has a purple background.

Maybe I need to download better/new video decoders.

Maybe I'll repost in the open source area for help.

Unhappy little help over here

So, long story longer. I updated AMD CAtalyst Control center and it led to a whole bunch of issues. I ended up installing V9 in an attempt to fix them, but it seems that the issue was Java.

So I uninstalled Java
Reinstalled Catalyst Control Center and drivers
reinstalled latest version of Java
Also installed the LAVFilters

and at least Sage will open. But I've still got issues

My remote wont work.
I can't play live TV. It just hangs there. It looks like it's recording the program not not playing it.
I can't play recorded TV programs...they just hang with a black screen
When I play a DVD from our server, the progress bar area and the description area (on top) have a purple background. I have it set to Overlay. If it's on EVR, it won't play. If on VMR9, it gives me an error (-4,0x80040217).
That's the same issue I had with V7, so I assume it won't play the ripped Blu-ray's on our server either.

Seems like there's some issue with the codec.
I noticed in the audio and video codecs that the LAV filters codecs don't seem to show up.

Any ideas? Help. I've got to go on two weeks of travel and need to get this working for the wife and kid. They can deal with the new interface...the wive just loves the v6...it was just so simple.

THanks in advance.

Updated Info...

So I tried to post the problem in the open source forum, but it was deleted...wihtout so much as a PM to tell me it was. That was like two hours wasted waiting for answers.

So here's an update. Full step by step of what I've done and where I'm at.

Uninstalled Java
reinstalled AMD catalyst control center
reinstalled some of my MOBO's drivers (audio driver)
installed SageTV v9 (SageTVSetup_9.0.4.232_RC1.000.exe) in a new directory from my v7
Installed latest Java (8.73)
Installed LAV for codecs
Opened SageTV v9 ast least it's opening now.
Ran full configuration wizard.
Closed Sage and move Wiz.bin into directory.
All recordings show up. EPG also works.

Here's what's not working:
  • Remote control won't work. I take this pack. Volume, stop, play, fast forward/rev and skip will work but nothing else. It seems the Irremote.ini disappeared. I have an old copy...where does that go?
  • Recorded TV will not play. I hear audio, but no video
  • ripped DVD's on the server will play in overlay mode, but with a purple background to the progress monitor and the dvd information area. If I put it in EVR mode, I hear audio but no video. If I put it in VMR9 it freezes (sometimes crashing sage).
  • ripped Blu-rays won't play in EVR; it just hangs there. In overlay it showed as garbled or crashed the system. I didn't bother VMR9
  • MP-3's all play fine.

NEW: HD recordings won't play in Windows Media Player. It says it's running out of memory.

Also, the LAV codecs. Not sure about these. I don't see any new options in the decoders. For instance, in the H.264 decoder, there's only the MicrosoftDTV-DVD decoder showing. If I list all decoders, then there's a huge list and I have no idea which to use.

It's just been so long since I've had to fuss with SageTV and I'm under such a time constraint trying to get this working fully before I go on travel. Thanks for all your patience and help in advance.

This may be a silly question, but before you bang your head any further, do you have a complete backup image your SageTV server that you could reinstate quickly?

As I posted in your other v9 UI topic, your repeated posts were merged in this original topic of yours. The forum rules ask that the same questions not get posted in multiple places.

Sage is not running as a server. I just have a some file shares that my sage is mapped to (for music, photos, ripped DVDs/bluRays, and family videos) as well as a couple local hard drives with all our recorded TV shows. (basically just running as a client).

In addition, it's such a basic installation (no add ons or STIs/STVs that I could scrub the whole thing and start fresh...which is basically what I did today. All I really need is the Wiz.bin.

I do thank you for your concern.

Thanks. Sorry about that. I'm just in a flurry about it all. Busy weekend and this was not on the agenda. Travel coming up...gotta keep the wife and kiddo happy. No soap operas result in a soap opera at the home front.

Try reinstalling Sage TV version 9, then reinstall it again using the Repair Option as I ran in to the same problem and had to do it with Sage TV Client which was fine but forgot to do it when I installed the placeshifter and had to do it with that again.

Hopefully that is the problem.

He meant "do you have a complete image backup of the whole computer on which you have Sage software installed?" His suggestion was to restore the complete image backup of your whole computer so you could get back to where you were before you started.

No, that I do not have. That is indeed a good idea. Never had a problem like this before...but then I guess you never have a problem like this until you do and then having a restore point is good to have.

Actually I think you need an image backup of the system drive more then a Restore Point. I've had many time where rolling back to a prior restore point didn't help me fix a problem. But when I restored from a disk image my system was back to normal at the time the image was taken. Which at the time I had done daily.

what issue is this trying to repair? Not seeing the codecs?

I tried repairing sage, but still no dice. Sage doesn't seem to see any codecs for video rendering.

Aside from the remote not working, it seems like a codec issue. Is that a correct assumption?

What does EVR do?
How does EVR, VMR, and overlay vary?
How does SAge choose the codec? Is that just in the 'Detailed Setup' options?
Since Sage can see all the codecs when I enable it to do so, which should I use for:
- MPEG2 decoder filter
- H.264 decoder filter
- VC-1 decoder filter
- player for non-MPED files
- Audio Renderer
- MPEG2 Audio decoder filter
- HD AUdio Decoder filter
- DVD decoder filter
- DVD AUdio renderer
- DVD Decoder filter

I know that's a lo to ask, but with all the codecs available after installing LAV or k-lite, I just need a place to start.

Thanks again.

UPdate: I started out simply trying to get our ripped dvds to play

I used:
DVD Renderer: EVR
DVD Video Decoder filter: Microsoft DTV-DVD Decocer
DVD Audio Renderer: AMD HDMI Output (since I'm using that not the MOBO's audio output)
DVD Audio Decoder Filter: AC3

Result: Sage TV won't play. It just hangs there with a black screen. No swirly of death, just a black screen.

I can, though, watch a recorded show with Classic media player.
I can also watch the Vido_TS file with that program.
If I play a blu-ray, I see video, but the audio is a ear-splitting, high pitch static.

Another update: I tried the following settings:

Detail Setup - Video/Audio
Renderer = EVR (try them all thought for each file type)
Mpeg2 Video Decoder Filter = Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Filter
H.264 Video Decoder Filter = Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Filter
VC-1 Video Decoder Filter = Default
Media Player for non Mpeg files = Directshow
Dscaler Deinterlae filter = Disabled
Audio Renderer = Default
Mpeg2 Audio Decoder filter = SageTV MPEG Audio Decoder
HD Audio Decoder Filter = Default
Audio Playback Delay 0

Detail Setup - Advanced
3D Acceleration = ON

The blu-ray will play...but not viewable. I get sound, but the video is a bunch of streaked lines. I tried to screen capture it, but it came out as a black screen.

HOpefully between this post and the last someone will have an idea.

You should definitely have codecs from overwriting your old Sage TV v7 settings as it sounds like what you had may need re-installed or is gone now.
