Landscape is the only mode supported for phone/tablet. I basically lock the application into landscape mode to emulate a TV. i could let the app go into portrait, but all that would happen is the "landscape" image would be centered (very small) in the middle of the phone with a black top/bottom bars. I don't think that's useful, so I don't allow for it... and if I did, it actually complicates the code, since I have to handle state changes between land/port, which is doable, but, not something I want to spend time on, right now.

Another use has been trying to use this miniclient as a placeshifter. Conceptually there is nothing that should prevent it, but, there are some UI command that I'm not handling (or not handling correctly), and the end result is a black UI. I will be fixing that, so, eventually you'll be able to use it as a placeshifter.

Indiegogo Update

WOW - 3 days... and it's 100% funded. I set the campaign to run 60 days, since that's how long I figured it would take to reach the 100% mark I guess I greatly underestimated the generosity of the community

Thanks to everyone that donated to the campaign, and directly. The campaign runs until Jan 19th and will continue to accept funds... although they are not dispersed to me until 15 days after the deadline

I think the first thing on the shopping list is a Shield TV, since I think that it has the best option of being the HD300 replacement... Although I think I might pick up the Q-Box as well, since I think for ~$100 It seems to be a good unit. (I already have 2 nexus players -- which for my testing has been working ok)

I can tell you how it works on mine at the moment. Yours and anyone else's mileage may vary . I use the old SageTV 3 STV because the family knows it very well and hate when I change things. You need a keyboard attached, USB, Bluetooh, I've tried both and both work. I enter the external address of my server in the New Server section of the miniclient then select it to connect, you are presented with 2 empty text input fields. Enter your placeshifter user in the top one and your placeshifter password in the bottom one then press Enter. If you are successful connecting the screen will go black and just stay that way. This is a problem when placeshifting, no UI . Since I know in the old STV that pressing the down arrow takes me to live TV, I press it once then press Enter and I am watching live TV. I can change the channel by entering the channel number on the keyboard and pressing Enter but that's pretty much it. It is very cool to watch my live TV away from home on my Tablet and will be awesome when stuckless gets the UI and controls working. The only way I have found to exit the app while connected like this is to use the Android Home button on the Tablet to get out of it.

Awesome news! The shield tv is giving be better performance than an hd300. Everything is really quick. This is probably due to raw horsepower. I bet once tuning is done on the graphic sides of things it will get even faster.

Home button suggestion

Is the Android TV remote home button re-mappable ? If so, would it be possible to catch a short press to return back to the STV's home screen ? (Maybe a long press to return to the Android launcher in case miniclient hangs) I've experienced some slowness jumping between miniclient and the launcher which I suspect could be avoided by forcing the user to exit miniclient cleanly using 'exit SageTV' rather than the home button

Thanks

It's likely it can be mapped, but I haven't looked into it. You should open a defect/enhancement.

Threw my $20 into the Indiegogo pot. That should pay for about 15 minutes of programming time.

Now where's my fully featured iOS client?

Just kidding of course...

It's great to see active development even if I don't have an immediate need for an Android client. That said, I can definitely see the potential. It would be a great way to consolidate SageTV and the many streaming options into one box and modernize and future-proof the extender hardware at the same time.

Hopefully your effort on this project inspires others to join in on the SageTV Open Source development. Based on the amount of traffic this thread gets, I think you have a lot of people excited about the potential for this client.

Keep up the good work!

Is the Nexus Player a good device to try this out on?

Best Buy Canada has them on sale for $50 right now.

edit - That's Best Buy US. It looks like Best Buy Canada doesn't carry the product.

If you're looking for someone to test on a few devices.. I have the following
XIOS XS and DS
two versions of G-BOX Midnight
Amazon FireTV
MyGica ATV380

and a few others that likely won't work..

I'm happy to help where I can.

Feel free to download and test things out. I think the FireTV has been tested. I tend to link to devices on the main page to make it easy for people to figure out which devices have been tested, and how they performed.

New Version 0.13-ALPHA

Not much new...
1. Added a preference to Auto-Connect to the last server with configurable timeout.
2. Added a preference to show unmapped keys. ie, if you hit a remote key, a floating message (toast) will appear showing "UNMAPPED KEY: keyname" if the key is not mapped. This should make it easier for people to report unmapped remote buttons.

I have to ask. I remember you saying that you didn't think that android development would go very fast and that the video part would be the most difficult (obviously considering it's Android). So now that we're at this point I can say that the progress you have madebis so impressive. Did you think it would progress this quickly? My nexus player is very close to replacing my PC client (some of the low powered ones) and I never would have thought it would have been possible.

Thanks again for the hard work. I wish I could do more to contribute.

Tested this on my 1st generation FireTV last night and it worked very well. I've not upgraded to FireOS 5 yet.

I think it's been progressing well. The progress is good, but, the video still has a long ways to go, so I think it's progressing about quickly as I thought it would. With any project there are always leaps and bounds at the start followed by long stretches of minor increments. So, I'd say much of the easy stuff (and some hard stuff) is done, so, it's going to look like not much is happening, but really, there is stuff happening, just not leaps and bounds.

When we can iron out the PUSH video seeking, I'll likely remove the ALPHA and start calling it BETA.

Also, people can probably start entering defects into the issue tracker. I do check it, and sometimes when I need something easy to accomplish (after longer periods of feeling stalled), I tend to pick stuff from the issue tracker.

This is a stupid question, but if I use this with a fireTV or firestick, does it show up as a "channel" in the existing UI, or is this more like a full OS replacement, so you just get SageTV, like a HD300?

This is an App, so it should just show up like Netflix, or Youtube, etc.

stuckless,

Thanks I was able to setup my remote to using flirc to pass keystrokes to SageTV. So now I can use my universal remote for all nexus apps. Now I use the same remote for KODI and SageTV.
