New Sage Server

I have a Windows Home Server (WHS V1) running Sagetv for WHS. Yes its long in the tooth but has been working flawlessly for years.

I would like to upgrade this server to another operating system and prolly some new hardware (Re: SSD etc). It has a mixture of 9 hard drives (1 x 500Gb for OS, and 8 x 1.5 and 2tb WD green drives). (and yes have replaced most of the WD green drives when they had a decent warranty ) :-)

Question is if I upgrade the OS (not sure what to yet, Win 10, Esstentials perhaps) I'm assuming I cannot use the Sagetv for WHS on another OS? Can i convert / migrate this to Sagetv for regular Windows OS?

Thanks appreciate any comments

I think all the SageTV Windows licenses are interchangeable. I believe the only difference with the WHS version was the inclusion of the Placeshifter license.

And of course, license OS restrictions are moot once the Open Source version is available.

Maybe, maybe not. We'll have to wait and see what happens as far as the EPG is concerned. There may still be a good reason to use valid license keys once the Open Source version is available...

I wasn't saying the license keys would be useless, just that what OS they were originally for will not matter anymore. Jeff's said he's pulling the licensing code (ie the code that requires a license to run, and that checks that that key is valid for the product/OS) is one of the things being removed in the OS version.

You should be able to use any valid Server license key on any install to access the Sage/Google EPG service.

In any case, to answer your question, there is no difference between a WHS license and a Windows license. WHS uses a SageTV for Windows server license. The SageTV WHS software simply allows one extra placeshifter connection over and above any placeshifter licenses registered in the server - this was to compensate for the lack of a local UI on the WHS install.

If what you were really asking about was moving your sagetv install, your best bet is to install from scratch, get everything set up with your new recording folders and such, and copy/move the recordings into them. Then, copy your wiz.bin from your old install into the new install and restart sage. It should find all the old recordings in the new locations, and be good to go from there. I would NOT copy over your configuration files and such, as it will be worth it to go through those from scratch and configure this as a new system.

Thanks for the reply - so my license is good for a regular windows install but obviously the code is different. So I would need to download the windows version from here http://download.sage.tv/SageTV_V7_1_9Setup.exe, and use my existing license. ?

Now all i have to do is find that email with the license info. Also appreciate the suggestion on the install setup.

I started a total rebuild of my main server that hosts my SageTV v7 stuff and where it is summer and all the recordings are all watched and deleted, I just opted for a full fresh everything. Wrote down the shows that needed rescheduling and put them in to the new server.

I use WHS 2011 for my server as MS was practically giving away the licenses at one point ($60 each is a deal). Also, where it is based on Server 2008 R2, it is a major leap over WHS v1 short of the loss of native drive extender.

The one advantage I have had doing it is that I have been building up and testing the new server at the same time as running the old server.

Good luck with it all!
