Last Facebook Holdout? or Adventures in Anti-social networking

So was I the last facebook holdout? They finally defeated me.

I joined just so I could subscribe to the events of an NYC-based Clash tribute band who came to a location near me in NJ and I missed it because I didn't know they would be there.

I was hoping to have no FB posts, but apparently they put a life event on my timeline... I can't delete the 'birth' event, but I think I can at least hide the date.

facebook... do I really have to? ... rats <sigh>

I guess it's all up to me now. I will stand on this wall and push back against those who would enslave us.

I shall go on to the end, I shall fight on the webs,
I shall fight on the seas and oceans,
I shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, I shall defend our freedom, whatever the cost may be,
I shall fight on the beaches,
I shall fight on the landing grounds,
I shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
I shall fight in the hills;
I shall never surrender!

Nope, me either. Too many years in I.T. security have opened my eyes to the ways of the dark side, er I mean social media.

Nope, you weren't. There's still a few of us. I even convinced a friend of mine to close his account

You won't find me joining friendface anytime soon.

Forced to open an account when our first child was born (2009), to share pics with relatives. Friended a whole bunch of people (hundreds) I knew from high school, college, etc. Discovered I mostly don't like the people they are now (way too much political stuff, on both sides of the aisle, and way too much race-related stuff) and hid most of them from my wall. And I refuse to play any Facebook apps/games. Plus it can be depressing because out of hundreds of people, there will always be someone sharing pics from some amazing vacation they are on, or some amazing job they have, making you jealous that you don't have their life.

As a result, my Facebook page, when I occasionally check it, is mostly posts from TV shows, bands, or restaurants that I "liked", and a few remaining friends who don't hardly post at all. In other words, I couldn't spend more than 2 minutes on Facebook at any time because there's not even enough there for me to read or comment upon.

I can honestly say the only thing I really "gained" by joining Facebook is I got back in touch with maybe a half-dozen old, good friends, with whom I'd lost touch. But after a brief "how ya been?", I haven't really communicated with them either. I suppose it's good to know that I can reach them, should I ever have the need.

I've considered closing it several times, but never bothered. At some point, I'm sure they'll force me to do something I dislike, and I'll close it rather than succumb.

Wow, I thought I might be the only one posting to this topic, but I guess there are plenty of us, uh I mean you , facebook holdouts remaining.

I hope event subscriptions send emails because I don't plan to log in much and the app will remain disabled on my phone.

For reasons of being a fan I tried Facebook. Locked it down avoided giving as much real info as I could. I was then immediately creeped out when it connected me to people I know. It didn't take me long to see vividly in person (not just from the news stories of settings that change on you and new features introduced which you need to immediately change default settings for) that Facebook's aggressive data gathering moneymaking interests are not in line with my interests. Things I would want to do would require changing a setting opening up the door to other things I didn't want. I killed the account in under a year. Twitter works great

Just an FYI that you're using Facebook to do what Twitter was designed for.

I had an account years ago deleted and haven't looked back. Twitter fullfills my needs and instagram handles photos for distant family.

+1 for Anti-Social computing.

No Facebook.
No Twitter, paraphrasing a famous quote "I am not a twit".

I don't even like or want a cell phone, I carry one for work because they pay for it.

No Facebook, no Twitter, no Instagram. Forums are about as close as I get to social networking.
You'll find me at the campground this weekend being "social" with the neighboring campers.

I used classmates.com for that years before Facebook. funny, I don't think classmates knew what social potential they were sitting on or how to make that leap.

Yes, there are plenty of holdouts. Information is power, and Facebook's entire existence is about gathering information, and getting the lemmings to happily provide it under whatever terms and conditions the corporation sees fit. The fact that it provides any form of service is secondary, or less.

The exact same reason I stopped using it years ago.

I shut down my Facebook account 3 years ago and I don't miss it at all. Moreover, my 28 year old daughter shut down her account, when she finished law school. She thinks it's prudent for a practising lawyer to avoid Facebook.
