Sage not recognizing all music in a library?
I have about 16GB of self-ripped MP3 and WMAs. About 4GB are WMAs mislabeled as MP3s.
Sage doesn't seem to be recognizing a *LOT* of my music collection -- perhaps a fulll half. It just isn't present when I browse my albums. Help? |

Addendum: It's recognizing 69 of approximately 220+ albums...

It doesn't support playing WMA files. Do a forum search on WMA for more info... it comes up fairly regularly. Wish it did, but...

Sonuva <bleep>! I guess I'll have to re-rip into MP3s...
I love Sage but sometimes getting everything just so is frustrating enough to make one want to mope off into the corner and cry... Re-ripping 100+ CDs.... |

Ah! Found it! It's because I largely did my ripping using iTunes and had ID3v2 tags when Sage (why? why? why?) reads ID3v1 tags! Got Media Tagger and fixed it. Now most of my music is available on Sage. Still, no album covers but <bleep> it. I don't care. As long as the music's there, close enough!

Thanks but I had already read it (you may note my post on the thread). However, I still fail to see why playing non-DRMd WMA is an issue. DRM can be disabled in ripped music within WMP, you know.

It has to do with the architecture Sage is built on. Everything underneath works by streaming the ISO compliant files (even SageTV does this) so when you come across a proprietary file format that does not support the standard methods, Sage can't do it.

Rather, the trouble then is that the WMAs can't be streamed from a Sage server to clients? The codecs must be available for use to play the files locally.

I think SageTV uses the same calls to access files as SageClient does. It just works faster .
I would kind of like to see the ability to have some file types that the Client could throw an error on but the server could just play from the file-system instead. |

Hmm... for that matter, you'd think that the client could simply request that the server load a file, decode it, and then stream the file contents to the client. Java is handy enough at streaming. This ought to be a doable do.

I think that is where the WMV stuff runs into trouble. I don't think the methods in Java will work too well with MS$ proprietary stuff.

That may be true if Sage is 100% Java without any native libraries to fall back on. As there is a Sage.dll (just checked for my own sanity), this doesn't appear to be the case.
Admittedly, I'm unfamiliar with Windows APIs, as I'm a Java and UNIX coder by vocation (and damn well prefer to stay that way for now!), but, unless the WMA decoder is coupled tightly with WMP, I don't see why a native C/C++/<insert evil M$ language here> can't do the decoding and then pass the result up to Java for streaming.

I think (from remembering previous posts) it is related to the WMA decoders having bult-in Digital Rights Management, so that you can only read files directly from disk, and only send the output directly to the soundcard (DRM would be easily bypassed otherwise)
