Sage freezing - Hang detected

I am running Gemstone with Sage 7 and Sage is freezing when accessing flow manager and other options. The logs always seem to reference "SAGETV_PROCESS_LOCAL_UI Hang Detected" when the freezing occurs, and I am forced to manually kill and restart Sage. I have reloaded Java (currently 7u60 32-bit) and also tried to load 6u24, but still get freezing.

I have not experienced the freezing without Gemstone, and typically have not seen it through normal menu navigation, but understand this may very well not be related to Gemstone at all and needed to start somewhere. The server that Sage is running on is new and I did not have this issue running on the previous XP box. I have reinstalled Sage from scratch and the problem did not seem to change.

Any help would be appreciated, and have attached a log file for reference.

I have not had a chance to check the files you uploaded but likely would need debug turned on and the gemstone one Phoenix logs uploaded to dig further.

What is your java heap set to on the server and clients? Gemstone really needs 1024 for the heap. I have not had any memory issues at all with Gemstone in a long time.

Thank you for the quick response!!

Java size is set to 1038. I have captured another freeze and grabbed the additional logs you suggested, so they would all be referencing the same session.

And no clients, 1 occasional placeshifter, which was not on during the session.

The logs clearly show the hang but not much more to discover why.

What is it you were doing just before the hang? It looks like you were loading a Flow? Is the flow VERY large...ie: All Videos? Although I can load VERY large Flows without issue....they do take time but the do load.

Can you in more detail describe when you do when the hang begins and how do you get out of it (restart server, it comes back later etc).

Thanks

When the GUI freezes, I use Alt-Tab to access the Desktop or Task Manager (if running), then close Sage using Task Manager and restart the application. Sometimes the system seems to run slow and things come back to life after a minute or two, but I usually get the spinning circle to let me know something is still happening. During the freezes, the screen just stops. I will give it a few minutes, but if nothing changes, I will restart per above. I have left it running for hours, just to see if it was extremely slow versus frozen, but it didn't come back. I have confirmed through the STV Web Interface that the server still seems to be functioning normally while the GUI is frozen. I am able to access recordings, schedule, verify programs are recording, etc during freezes from another PC on the network.

Different option sub menus cause a delay or slowness and others a complete freeze. In the log example I was accessing sub menus in the options for a flow. It wasn't freezing while loading the flow, only after accessing sub menus in the options.

I am able to consistently reproduce the freeze by doing the following: Main Menu | Options |Theme Settings then selecting Highlight Sets or Background Manager. The system would either freeze on the sub menu (Highlight Sets options dialogue) or in transition (Background Manager). The Transparencies menu usually loads, but then either crawls or freezes. The Main Menu Settings, Main Menu Font, and Header Title Font windows load normally with no freeze or slowness.

I have Windows 7 64-bit and the location of the program file is C:\SageTV\SageTV.

So there could be an issue with the Gemstone install going into the "right" folders. Some of the important settings and configs needed by Gemstone could be "missing" as they may be in another folder that Gemstone is not finding (I have seen this before when the default install location is not used and using 64 bit Windows).

Check the default install location....

C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV
or
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV

and see if they exist and if the "C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\Gemstone" folder exists and the subfolders for "defaults", "menus" exist.

Basically you need to ensure that you have the following subfolders in your own SageTV path...

C:\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\Gemstone\defaults
C:\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\Gemstone\menus

if you do not then Gemstone is hanging while trying to load something....at least that's my best guess right now.

Yes, (unfortunately) I do have the correct folders in the locations you specified. The defaults folder has 5 property files and the menus folder has 1. There is also a weather folder under Gemstone.

There is a shell SageTV folder in the Program Files (x86), but it is empty.

Try copying the contents of the STVs/Gemstone folder to that shell Programs folder and see if that helps....perhaps I had it the other way around...been awhile since I saw an issue that may be folder location related.

I copied over the folders and contents to the location under program files (x86). There seemed to be a little improvement in some menus under Theme Settings, but the freezing still is happening. The flows option still freezes as well. I did get a freeze almost immediately after loading tonight. After one of the restarts, right after Sage came up, I tried navigating up in the main menu and the session froze. It's making me doubt this is a Gemstone issue and is a more general issue.

Not sure what else to suggest. You could try a clean install to the default folder of Sage and then Gemstone and see what happens.
