Hang detected?
I've been playing with the studio, and so I probably screwed something up. But all of the sudden, when I try to do ANYTHING in Sage it takes forever. The console screen is telling me a hang was detected. So, I rebooted. Didn't fix it. I replaced the sagetv3.xml file....didn't fix it. I uninstalled and reinstalled Sage...didn't fix it.
The studio finally does come up now, but anything like navigating a directory takes about 20 seconds per click because "EventThread - SAGETV_PROCESS_LOCAL_UI Hang Detected." |

Something hosed on your java install? Have 2 versions installed?

Not that I'm aware of or would have intentionally done. How would I even be able to tell if I did have 2 java's installed?
Looking in the add/remove window, I have the Java development kit and 4 different updates for java 6 listed. This problem only seems to happen when I open the studio...just regular sage doesn't appear to have a problem. I guess I can uninstall, delete the entire sage directory, reboot, and then try again....unless anyone else has a suggestion? |

Gerry has previously recommended this (for java):
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32125 you could give it a try PS I use it too, and it works fine.

Just uninstall all the versions of java except the latest from add/remove. See if that helps.

Ok...complete uninstall, directory removal and reboot. Then reinstalled the latest sage. No difference except now, instead of actually telling me in the console screen that hang was detected, it doesn't say anything...but the delay is still there. The studio screen takes about 1 minute to come up, and trying to open a new STV takes about 20 seconds per directory entry.
I tried javara. It said I had the latest java, and it deleted about 3 different older java versions, but that was all I saw it do. I'm wondering if the registry is hosed somehow because for one thing, the console is still coming up, even though I uninstalled everything. It also doesn't ask me for my registration key. |

I think the registration key is stored somewhere in the registry and it usually will not ask you again if you're reinstalling on the same PC. (Registry is a guess but it is stored somewhere on the PC.)
Other than the standard "Did you install anything lately" since the last time you knew it worked I'm not sure. Mine comes up in 5 seconds. And I don't know if a firewall change could prevent Studio from working correctly but you might try turning that off. If system restore is turned on you could try going back a week or two if it doesn't cause you to lose too much. (Just new apps installed should be all you lose for the most part) Gerry

Good grief.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled java and sage. I turned off my firewall and antivirus'. No difference. It still takes about 30 seconds for the studio to come up and when i try to open a new stv, clicking on each directory in the file browser causes about a 20 second wait. Short of a complete system reinstall, I'm not sure what to do. I don't know if I have system restore available....I'll look into that. |

I don't remember if the console has more info than the debug log, but you could check.
You could also check your java heap size. - Andy

well, I think I'm slowly screwing myself into a full system reinstall.
I found a system restore point of over a week ago. I know I've played with the studio since then. I restored...now sage doesn't start at all. When I click the icon, the black outline of the console window flashes for a second and then it's gone...and that's all that happens. I tried reinstalling sage, and it STILL only does that. |

Ok...java was the problem there. So I installed the latest java again. Now, sage comes up, and I'm finally back to the point where....it is at least TELLING me about the hang being detected. But same problem...it keeps spitting out "Hang detected" messages while I'm waiting for the studio to come up. Then driving through directories takes forever.

Nothing more in the sagetv_0.txt file that I can see. Just this over and over again while I wait for it to continue.

There was nothing before that point in the log that might be related?
Have you tried increasing Java's max heap size? You could try renaming or moving all the .properties files & their .autobackup copies & try reconfiguring. I don't know if you've done that already, but uninstalling & reinstalling doesn't clear the properties files unless you manually get rid of them. Otherwise, check with tech support for more ideas. - Andy

Well, I haven't tried the java heapsize thing just because, as far as I know, I haven't done anything different that should have affected that since it last worked. But, heck, I'll give it a try.
There MIGHT be something more in the log, but it's not obvious to me. For me, I'd need something surrounded by *ERROR ERROR* to notice it. I did completely uninstall and I then renamed the old Sage directory, so when it reinstalled it created a new one. Do I need to do more than that, or is Sage wiley enough to find it's old .property files? Edit: changed javaheapmaxsize from 0 to 0x200...no difference (assuming I just had to restart sage, not reboot) Last edited by beelzerob; 09-07-2008 at 07:27 AM. |

Well, I looked over the log. I'm getting one of those hang detected notices before I even try to start the studio. Here is the first notice, and all of the log before it.

Well, I went in and deleted all the .properties files and the autobackup property file, and it had the result of removing the hang message. Note that it does STILL hang because it still takes about 30 seconds or more for Studio to load...but now it doesn't actually tell me it is hanging.
I think I'll try one more complete uninstall and reinstall before I talk to tech support. What a pain. |

Shot in the dark.
You don't happen to have a path defined as a recording drive or an import path that for some reason right now doesn't exist? Like a USB drive or a network drive that for some reason has fallen off the face of the earth? Gerry

None that I can think of, but even if I did, wouldn't a complete uninstall/reinstall fix that? It takes me back through the setup process where I'd setup any import directories and I just hit next.
I've now done as much of an uninstall and clearing as I can...I even went into the registry and deleted whatever looked sagelike. When I start sage, it seems fine. Then I hit Shift-Ctrl-F12, and I get the little swirly "I'm busy" indication, and about 30-40 seconds later Studio finally comes up. If I then close studio and hit Shift-Ctrl-F12 again, then studio comes right up. But if I close Sage, restart it, and hit it, it again takes 40 seconds or so. Off to tech support I go, I guess. How bizarre. |

This is a PC client, correct? Reboots, reinstalls-all on the PC client. During any of this do you have Sage server and did you reboot the Sage server?

my server and client are all on the same PC. Currently I'm only using sage for studio development purposes, so it's just installed on my desktop PC and only runs when I start it up.
