I was wondering about this product. One feature is h.264 streaming.
Does sagetv only allow mpeg2 recording?

Yeah I will skip this one already have 3 dual ASTC tuners I can easily convert to H264. Maybe if they come out with a Prime that will do hardware encoding.

I haven't tried this yet but there is a version of OpenElec for the Pi which is optimized to run off of a fast USB stick. It is supposed to be fairly responsive.

That's right - the system boots from the SD card but then the USB seems to take over for the storage.

Supposedly it runs faster from a USB 3.0 stick which seems strange since I don't think the Pi supports USB 3.0.

Does anybody know what tuner & digital demod is used in the HDHR 4 ATSC? Or if its any better with multipath than previous generations? My HDHR is my worst tuner in terms of reception, but my best in terms of not having to worry about drivers, etc.

I know they claim the new products feature a "latest generation tuner and demod", but they said the same thing about the HDHR2. It turned out that in the HDHR2 they used an ATSC + QAM tuner that was optimized for power, not ATSC reception & multipath rejection. So it was indeed cutting edge for power use & heat generation, but performed far worse than my Samsung & LG based PCI and USB tuners.

Also, regarding sage usage, I don't think the transcoding is used with recording with sage. I think it only transcodes for the DLNA playback feature. I think when used directly, it will still send the original stream.

Too bad - it would be nice if it would output a H.264 stream that is playable directly on iDevices.

It transcodes recordings on the fly in WMC and Mythtv.

Firmware update news... the new HDTC firmware update is currently in QA.

With this update you can record TV in Windows Media Center transcoded into AVC format.

Likewise you can record TV in MythTV transcoded into AVC format.

(I have my home MythTV system configured for recording everything in 1080i60/720p60 AVC format).

So is it work getting one of these when your primary use is SageTV but you might occasionally want to connect via DLNA to a mobile device?

Any word on whether the tuner is any better/different than previous generation HDHR OTA units?

There seems to be about a $110 premium at Newegg for this latest device($170) vs the HDHR3($60) .

I am certainly not goanna jump up and buy it... Right now transcoding what I want works fine.
