HD300 Shuts down when trying to play MKV
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this same problem: When trying to play back some .MKV files, the HD300 shuts down (powers off). After this happens, the HD300 can be powered on, BUT any attempt to connect to the Sage server causes an immediate shutdown. It takes a factory reset to get out of this condition.
I know that the problem has to do with a potentially corrupt .MKV file - if I re-create the MKV using handbrake, often times this will make the .MKV playable. Regardless, I would hope that the HD300 would not behave in this manner. I have multiple HD300's and this problem has been observed on at least 3 of them. I am running the latest released firmware on the HD300 - I think it's 20101007.

If there is some form of corruption with a specific MKV file, I'm not sure you can depend on any device to play it reliably. When you say you run it through handbrake, what encoding changes are you making to the file?
Does the original MKV play okay on a computer?

I am compressing TV recordings, blu-rays or DVDs to MPEG-4 + AC3 in an MKV container. Most times, the output is OK. Once in a while I encounter this problem. MKVs look OK on the PC, but I have not really looked into this much. Once in a while I get a bad MKV that is playable on the HD300, but the time bar won't indicate the proper ending time for the program.
I would hope that the HD300 would not behave in this manner - creating a condition where it shuts itself off until given a factory reset, even with a bad .MKV file. Maybe one of the beta firmware releases behaves better - haven't tried that yet. Before recently switching to Handbrake, I used megui and MKVmerge to encode and this problem never happened.

I've never had a problem with an MKV file.
I see that last BETA firmware had better MKV compatibility, that's what I have always used, so I'd definitely give that a shot before trying anything else. Have a read through this thread: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50840

I almost always use HB and over the past few months I noticed that virtually every new MKV file made the HD300 crash.
Last night using the latest HB release, I made a mkv of the bluray version of Licence To Kill. A mkv made from the same disk several months ago does not cause the HD 300 to crash.. The mkv I made last night caused the HD 300 to crash. I uninstalled HB and reinstalled version .95 and used that version to create yet another mkv version of Licence To Kill. The HD 300 had no problem playing the new file.

OK, the latest version of HandBrake, changed a lot of the default setting in the h.264 code. I'm betting at least one of those settings is the reason. I'm going to try some HB converts this weekend, and I'll let you know what happens at least on my HD200. (have no 300)

My DVDs worked fine, so it's a setting somewhere in Handbrake.

Thanks for the replies - I've been out of town for a while so haven't read the forum in a few days. I have been using constant frame rate, so I still don't know what is causing the MKV's to crash. Had another one crash last night. I did change audio to 640 kbps AC3 from a lower bit rate. I am going to re-encode with a 448 kbps AC3 and see if that helps.

I have my AC3 set to pass thru. I never touch that audio, unless there is no AC3 track to start with.

Lately I've been having issues with MKV's as well, generally really large ones. I can't figure out why. Just get a playback error. If I convert it in handbrake it works fine.
Why is it the server can play the file fine but not the HD300?

Once you've been able to isolate a particular MKV that you know makes the device crash, run MediaInfo on that MKV file and post the text here.
