Network share issues?

All,
I'm hoping some windows network "expert" comes along and figures out what I'm doing wrong. This is a network only issue, not SageTV, it's fine.

Setup:
Windows 7 pro 64x server
3 or 4 Windows 7 64x clients (Pro or better)
1 Windows XP 32 bit box.
Many many shares, with some I want to limit some machine's access to.
NOT using homegroups!!!

Issue:
After playing hour about 6 hours last night, I now have the XP box reading only the shares it should, but on one of my Windows 7 boxes (only one I can test easy), I still have access to ALL shares, when it should not. (BTW, at one point I had an account on that machine that did have full access)

Is there something else I need to do??? (clear a cache or something???)

TIA.

I'd start with the Security tab and ensure that's correct and then move on to the Sharing->Advanced Sharing->Permissions and ensure those are also correct. Also, make sure you don't have a parent/child folder conflict somewhere.

Although, when I've had similar issues, I've often found it faster to delete the share completely and start from scratch, recreating the folder and then adding the permissions back one at a time.

I just rebuilt my server, and ran into the reverse problem. I couldn't open a share to everyone. turns out there's a setting to allow anonymous sharing somewhere in the"sharing center" or whatever it's called. took me a week to find it, and now I don't remember where exactly it is. the setting overrides how the shares get configured.

I like win7 but sharing is messed up.

About 3 of the 6 hours were spent trying the Advance Sharing. In the end, I switched to the wizard, and had 100% the same results. Will the sharing wizard work at all for the setup I'm working towards?

No parent/child shares at all in my current layout.

I'll try removing the share and adding it back. Should I be able to do it with just one, to test it?

Oh, forgot 1 thing, server has an account for every user that needs access. (currently 3, my common one, a "tv" one, and the guy on the XP machine)

Just a thought: go to <control panel><user accounts and family safety><credential manager> and you may very well find a credential for that earlier account that had full access.

Or not, of course....

Control panel/Administrative tools/Local security policy/Network access; Let everyone permissions apply to anonymous users.

Enable/disable

OK, CCleaner Rules, even for networking!!!!

Ran it, and select every "network" option I could find (I think it was either "Network passwords", NetworkService temps or PeerNetworking), and shares are now working perfect!

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I think it was renamed years ago, though. I also use CCenhancer to get the winapp2.ini file. Lots of crap out there!

All,
First, thanks for the help here. I have a second issue now that I have all my shares working correctly.

My setup. All the machines I maintain are Windows 7 Pro, except 1 old XP (home?) machine (last one in my sig.). I have them linked by Hamachi, as I support 2 remote locations, and don't want anyone snooping on my file transfers (except the NSA).

After setting up the shares, the XP machine seldom shows in the list, and on my Win7 machines, I see a "machine" called "HOME". This "HOME" can't be accessed. (forget what happens when I right click) BTW, I can still access the Windows 7 machines, from the XP machine, that act as my servers and read and write to them just fine. I can also access the XP box from the Win7 boxes using the server name.

Any suggestions on fixing this issue???

Matt, I don't recall this suggestion ever helping me, but I'll throw it out there anyways ... isn't there something about XP Home's default workgroup name, where it was something other than "workgroup?" I seem to recall folks wanting to change the workgroup in XP Home to "workgroup" instead of the default, so that it matches the workgroup of the XP Pro and Win7 machines natively.

I believe it was MSHOME instead of Workgroup.

All my machines are set to "HOME". That's one of the first things I do. (Maybe I better check all of them, it's been a while)

Guess what, the "HOME" thing was all SageTV's fault!!! (not really) I had the HD200's "Windows File Server" turned on, and that was causing the "HOME" device on my Windows 7 machine.

The way I figured it out, was I ran a program called "WhoIsConnectedSniffer", and after a while, I saw that I had a machine called "HOME", looked up the IP address, and there was my HD200. Went in and turned off the "Windows File Server" option, and boom, no more machine called "HOME".

Haven't the slightest idea when I turned it on, or if it was always on, but unseen until I set the network to allow the XP machine and still have full control of shares. (I think it was the latter)
